Going to college will enrich your life in numerous ways, but the ability to form lasting relationships and build trust is the key to a successful and prosperous life. Building relationships with people is the foundation of networking. Successful business people know the importance of having firm networking skills.

If you are looking to become a doctor, lawyer or a teacher let me not defer your plan. By all means finish school. In college they tell you to study hard and get a degree but they never tell exactly how to become an entrepreneur.

To become a successful entrepreneur one must work on the single most important aspect of their business, networking. Networking is a way to help your community better understand your business and what you do, but most importantly it is a meeting of business owners who get together regularly to get to know, like and trust each other better. People feel comfortable doing business with people they trust. This is main purpose of networking.

Networking events happen everyday, in every city. There are multiple groups to join. I highly advise trying all of the groups in your area at least once before you decide to join. This will help you make the decision that can affect your business leads and referrals. After visiting many groups, you will have the knowledge you need to make an informed decision about where you feel most comfortable. Not all of them will be right for your specific venture, so pick wisely.

Once you have established a group, go regularly. This is very important. You need to become active in the group and show involvement. Become accountable. People will expect you to be there and look forward to seeing you there. Also while you are there meeting people try not to make the conversation all about yourself, it is important in relationship building to be interested in others. Ask them questions about themselves and their business, only when they ask you should you tell them what you do.

Remember you are there to build trust not sell you product or service. You will generate more leads this way than over the top selling tactics. Finally, remember first impressions cannot be forgotten, so dress to impress. Please make sure you are looking and feeling good the days you decide to be out in community networking. Dress like the professional you are. You will be treated with more respect when you give yourself respect, so please remember to come prepared. Be on your best behavior. We are all like tools, and we need to continue to sharpen our tools.
