As a dog owner, the last thing you want when walking your dog is to have to keep it on a lead. A dog will get much more exercise and have more fun if it is allowed to run and roam where it pleases (within reason). Of course, this isn't possible if a dog isn't well trained. It is too dangerous to allow a dog free reign if you don't have the confidence that it will come back when asked, and heel when commanded. To train your dog to heel, it is usually easier to do it with a lead as you then have complete control over where the dog can go. As with any training, make sure your dog is hungry so that it wants the treats you will use to reward good behaviour. Start by holding a treat in one hand and walk forward, getting your dog to follow the scent of the food. As your dog begins to walk with your, use the command "heel". If your puppy does not follow you the first time, don't worry, just hold its collar and guide it back to where you want it do go. Practice turning around by keeping the snack in the same hand so that the dog has to walk around you. Repeat the heel command whenever the dog walks with you like you want it to. It is important that the dog is interested in the snack you are using otherwise it will be very difficult to hold its attention. With dogs, and puppies especially, you will get better results keeping the training to short but regular sessions. Never physically reprimand your dog when it doesn't do what you want straight away. In time, nearly all dogs can learn basic commands such as "heel".
