There is a new ingredient on the horizon in the war on wrinkles – salicyloyl-phytosphingosine (SP for short). British researchers recently patented this compound which is a combination of exfoliating salicylic acid and a moisturizing fatty acid comparable to the protective oil’s of your own skin.
SP is derived from the naturally occurring skin-identical phytosphingosine, which itself has been shown to soothe and balance skin’s microflora in skin care applications. When combined with the benefits of salicylic acid, the results have been positive suggesting helpful applications in anti-aging skin care products.
According to the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, this new ingredient has been shown to reduce the depth of fine lines and wrinkles, fade sunspots, and smooth rough skin texture in photo-damaged skin.
In one clinical study, 30 women were asked to apply SP to one half of their face twice daily for 4 weeks and a placebo to the other side. Three dimensional profiles of the subjects’ skin showed a reduction in wrinkle depth and increased skin smoothness.
The other big advantage with this new ingredient is that it hastens cell turnover without added irritation.
So look for products with the salicyloyl-phytosphingosine ingredient in stores soon.
