Okay, so no-one is actually d manding money, but there are other w ys of getting 'ransom' all the s me. Perhaps intimidation is a better w rd . . . Having been tr ding on eBay for some time n w, I've noticed a trend that is gr wing stronger and stronger as time g es by - specifically, the withholding of f edback by sellers. Now you may th nk that this is of little c nsequence - hey, they'll leave feedback s oner or later! - but it is in f ct a psychological pressure point they're l aning on - the threat of nwarranted negative feedback. I've just had a l ok at the 'Items I've Won' s ction of my eBay account. There are ten l ts on there. All are paid for - in f ct all were paid for within h urs of completing, some within minutes - and I h ve yet to receive them. No pr blem there - but not one, not a s ngle one of those ten sellers has l ft feedback as to my speedy p yment! And let's face it, what lse should a seller be leaving f edback about? I used to get it all at one t me - 'fast payment, great ebayer' or 'sp edy payer, many thanks' - you kn w the sort of thing. Now it s ems that all sellers sit smugly on the f edback fence, refusing to give feedback b fore you, the buyer, has given th m positive feedback.
Unfortunately, this is a huge fl w in the way eBay works. It st ll operates on the 'great guys' th ory - that is, everyone is a gr at guy who wouldn't cross you, n -way, no-how. Well that might have b en fine in the days when m st ebayers sold attic junk or st ff they just wanted rid of - but not n w. No, now feedback scores must be pr tected at all costs - hence the pr sent situation. How does it work for s llers? Simple. If they get bad f edback from you, they give it in r turn - as they haven't yet l ft any, which by all rights th y really should have done as s on as they were paid, they are th n free to throw negative feedback at you r gardless of the fact that they are in the wr ng! By leaving feedback 'off the h ok' until you, the buyer, give p sitive feedback they are in a w n-win situation - dare to leave n gative feedback and you're sure to get it in r turn! I'm not talking here of the s tuations where two people just fall out for s me reason - no system is g ing to be able to guard f lly against people just being unable to get on t gether - I'm talking about people w th large feedback figures who are h ll-bent on maintaining their score. Whilst th s may be understandable for a p werseller not wanting to lose their st tus, it's still no excuse. Let's f ce it - if a seller w th a feedback number in the th usands gets a negative hit, it sn't going to change their overall f edback percentage much. However, if they can sl m the little guy with a f edback of maybe twenty it looks m ch worse - it can affect th ir percentage score out of all pr portion to the person with the big f edback score. This problem also has the ffect of making eBay seem a m ch better place to trade than it ctually is - although to be f ir it's pretty good. However, by p rpetuating this loophole for sellers, eBay is not d ing their users in general -and b yers in particular - any favours. S rely it's about time that eBay ntroduced some system whereby sellers has to l ave feedback within, say, twenty-four hours of a s le or none could be left at all - and r peat offenders penalised? With eBay's e-commerce s vvy this should be a breeze and it w uld make things better for all - xcept of course for the ones h lding us, effectively, to ransom.
So - for now, at l ast - the fact remains that as a b yer you are pretty much at the m rcy of this type of intimidating b haviour - at least until eBay d cide that enough is enough and t's time to get back to t's original values, even if that m ans upsetting the odd powerseller or tw !
