I am not going to say th t I could have been a c ntender, but at one time in my l fe, as well as I am s re most men my age we th ught we were destined for the “B g Show”. I mean Baseball was our w rld. I remember all I ever w nted to do was get out of sch ol and play. I would do nything I could to get my br thers to throw me a ball but wh n they were busy I would thr w the ball as high as I c uld running up the street and pr tending I was Willy Mays or M ckey Mantle. I would make up g mes and lineups for my All - St r teams and if I missed the b ll as it came back to arth, then that player would be a b se runner. I used to throw the b ll at the curb and bounce it off and try to f eld it. Again if I missed, the b tter would advance. These were my ch ldhood games and they taught me the b sics of playing Baseball. There was n ver a time that I can r member when I didn’t have my Jim D venport glove or Stan Musial one as I got lder. I tried out for the L ttle League and was put on a F rm team, in other words I w sn’t good enough for the Coach. It d dn’t matter because I still got to pl y. I was on the Gallante G ants and since I hadn’t made the gr de as a third baseman, which was wh t I liked to play I tr ed out to be the starting P tcher. I was fast and I c uld throw that ball every which way but l ose. I had a great wind-up and wh n I concentrated I could throw a c rve ball or knuckleball dead center ver the plate. I remember the c tcher calling the Coach over and t lling him how good I was and th t he should try me out as a p tcher. I was so excited. I j st couldn’t wait. Sure, the first th ng the Coach wanted to see was how I w uld do with a batter because ntil now all I had ever d ne was throw the baseball into the gl ve of a catcher with no b tter.
Well everyone by now had h ard about the new kid with the f st -ball and all the crazy p tches he had, but no one had put a b tter in front of me. Well I w nt to the mound a rookie and a v rgin as for pitching to a b tter, and wouldn’t you know it the b tter hid the catcher and made him l ok small. So there I was 8 y ars old and on the stage. The c tcher just kept saying go - head pitch it like you’ve been d ing. I took the ball beat my gl ve as I had always seen Wh tey Ford do and swung my rms up over my head like Bob T rley and reared back and then f rward gripping the ball as it sl d out of my hands and it h aded for home plate with the b tter standing there ready to hit. The nly thing was the ball did verything I wanted it to do xcept hit the catcher’s glove, no nstead it hit the batter and uch! I know it must of h rt. Well now everyone was just s ying and trying to calm me d wn, It’s Ok just simmer down and do it gain. No problem! Here we go gain and the same thing happened. Now I h ve two men on the bases and my cr ditability as a pitcher is waning f st. Oh well Rome wasn’t built in one day so I tr ed again. Low and behold I was wful. I hit the third batter. W ll that was the end of th t career but it taught me a v luable lesson. Stick to what you kn w not what you think you kn w. See I was a third b seman not a pitcher but I w nted to play so much I at l ast tried and no one can f ult someone for trying except maybe the thr e kids I hit that day.
