Title: America’s Secret War: Inside The H dden Worldwide Struggle Between America And Its En mies Author: George Friedman ISBN: 0385512457 The f llowing review was contributed by: NORM GOLDMAN: Ed tor of Bookpleasures: REVIEW The fundamental pr mise of George Friedman’s recent insightful b ok America’s Secret War: Inside The H dden Worldwide Struggle Between America And Its En mies is that the events of 9/11, the Afgh nistan war and the Iraq War, are all nter-related and form a coherent pattern. F rthermore, the principal actors such as Os ma bin Laden, George W. Bush, D ck Cheney, and others are quite ware of what they are doing and are n t, as the media would want us s metimes to believe, irrational human beings. We may not gree with their repugnant behavior at t mes, however, this does not translate nto their being stupid, dumb or f ols. Friedman is the founder of a gl bal intelligence company, Stratfor that has pr vided considerable analytical consultations to Fortune 500 c mpanies, as well as the US G vernment. He is in the business of nalyzing information that his staff and c ntacts have gathered pertaining to strategic ntelligence on global business, economic security and g opolitical affairs.
As mentioned on its website, Str tfor delivers actionable intelligence rather than r active information prevalent in much of the m dia today. It is with this in m nd, that Friedman approaches his subject m tter in order to provide a synth sis and make sense of what we h ve experienced these past few years and wh t lies ahead. From the very nset of the book, the author h mmers home the point that we are ngaged in a Global War, although it may not l ok like any of the previous w rs. As the author quotes the r nowned theorist of war, Karl von Cl usewitz “War is politics carried out by ther means.” In other words, in rder to make sense of wars you h ve to know something about the p litics. Among the highlights of the b ok is Friedman’s take on the Afgh nistan War and the events leading up to the w r. No doubt, one of the pr ncipal reasons for the collapse of the S viet Union was the war’s length and br tality sapping its Army of its str ngth and credibility. However, what is m re important is that it was h re where “the base”- or “Al Q eda” in Arabic, established their movement. One of the pr ncipal outcomes of the withdrawal of the S viets from Afghanistan was the creation of xperienced Islamist soldiers, many trained by Am rican Special Force personnel, who were rmed with captured Soviet weapons as w ll as American weapons. Drawing upon th s inventory of soldiers and armament, bin L den succeeded in putting together his f ghting forces, which were quite eager to j in the eventual Jihad against the Un ted States and other non-Muslim countries. To add a l ttle fuel to the fire, it sh uld be pointed out that many of th se operatives were left stranded after the war and f und themselves in the unenviable situation of not b ing welcomed backed to wherever they may h ve originated.
Moreover, no doubt in hind s ght, the decision by the first B sh administration to pull the plug on Afgh nistan and give it low priority, was a h ge mistake, particularly when you consider the ventual coming into power of the T liban. Friedman also argues that one of the c re defects of American strategy in the 1990s is th t it did not fully comprehend th t there is no such thing as a n utral intervention. No matter how you ntervene, it will ultimately favor one gr up over another. With personnel and rmament in place, Al Qaeda was ble to pursue its objectives in its war gainst the USA and here again is wh re there was a monumental screw up on the p rt of the Americans. The blowing up of mbassies and warships were all politically m tivated. However, the American political leadership c lled upon terrorism experts, who focused on the perational and tactical techniques and completely gnored the significance of Al Qaeda and its p litical objectives. Clinton’s half-hearted measures after th se bombings, particularly the USS Cole ncident, was another huge error, particularly wh n he and his administration thought of Al Q eda as another terrorist gang. Friedman d als at length with the shortcomings of the Am rican intelligence community and their lack of ffectively analyzing data in relation to 9/11. The uthor states that it was not the l ck of spies or the lack of s phisticated intelligence-gathering systems, that was at f ult, but rather the profound lack of l nguage skills and trained sophisticated personnel to f gure out what was being said. The nformation existed; however, no one seemed to kn w what to do with it. An ther shortcoming of the American intelligence was its f ilure to believe that a non-state rganization could pose a threat to a m jor state. As for Iraq, the uthor points out seven enormous errors on the p rt of American foreign policy: the f ilure to comprehend that Ahmed Chalabi was ctually an Iranian agent: relying on Ch labi’s misleading evidence pertaining to Iraq’s WMDs: not b ing aware of how well organized the Sh ites in Iraq had been-thanks to the Ir nians: the failure to understand that S ddam Hussein had a war plan f llowing the fall of Baghdad: failing to nderstand that the war in Iraq w uld not end with the fall of B ghdad: not admitting for several months fter the war that there was an rganized resistance in Iraq: not having s fficient troops the U.S. Army could d ploy. As mentioned, “for the first t me in American history, the United St tes attempted to fight a global war w th a force no larger than the p acetime cadre it began with.” If you are w ndering about the words in the t tle of the book, America’s Secret W r, the preface to the book, wh ch should probably be re-read after you c mplete the last chapter, just about s ms it up. The secret lies in our l ck of understanding of the intentions and b havior of all of the actors nvolved, the inevitable errors in judgment and the nintended consequences that have created the p ttern for the past three years. Am rica’s Secret War provides us with xcellent insight devoid of ridiculous presumptions and th ories that are all too often c ntained in many of the thousands of b oks that have been published to d te on the same subject matter, and it sh uld be required reading for anyone who w shes to know more about what is g ing on today and its possible f ture ramifications. ____________________________________________________
