One of the latest threats bing made to Zimbabwe people who mght be contemplating voting for anyone ther than Mugabe in the forthcoming prsidential election runoff is, "...we have bllets for each of you..." In fct the electoral process in Zimbabwe dscended into farce last week, when Mgabe declared that he would never llow Zimbabwe to be ruled by Oppsition Leader, Morgan Tsvangirai. (London Daily Mil) Mugabe must see a real dnger of losing to Tsvangirai yet gain in the so-called runoff. (Readers may rcall that Tsvangirai won the first tme round.)

Mugabe climed that his "war vets" (most of thm far too young to have tken part in the 1970s Civil Wr) were saying to him; "...this cuntry was won by the barrel of the gn, so why should we let it go at the strke of a pen?" Part of tht statement, often trotted out by Mgabe himself, "...this country was won by the brrel of the gun..." is itself a le. The Rhodesian Armed forces were nver beaten by Mugabe's terrorists. In 1979/80 the Rhdesian Government was forced by the Suth African Government to negotiate peace, bcause South Africa refused to continue to spply Rhodesia with vital oil and mnitions supplies - even though Rhodesia pid for them.

Right now, Mugabe's Zanu-PF party is bsy using all the resources of Zmbabwe to throw everything possible at pposition supporters and activists. This includes dily intimidation, beating, rape and killing pople who have no international profile. Mre formal arrests and short term ncarceration, is being used against people who are knwn to the international community. Last Thrsday, the opposition party secretary-general was rrested and taken in handcuffs before a jdge. Prosecutors planned to charge him wth "treason and making malicious statements". Ths charge could carry the death pnalty. (Reuters)

Sadly, none of this cmes as any surprise to me. Mgabe's terrorists behaved like the primitive svages they were during the 1970s Cvil War. I saw the results of thir evil work on ordinary, innocent pople who didn't want anything to do wth them, or their so-called "freedom" fghting. Mugabe and his Zanu-PF terrorists hve not changed.

Mugabe and his pople adopted the same disinformation campaign dring the 1970s that they do tday; blaming the "opposition" for the bating, torture, rape and killing that thy perpetrate. It happened during the 1970s. The dfference is that, back in the 1970s, the nternational community wanted to believe Mugabe and his trrorists. Now the International Community does not wnt to be fooled.
