One of the latest threats b ing made to Zimbabwe people who m ght be contemplating voting for anyone ther than Mugabe in the forthcoming pr sidential election runoff is, "...we have b llets for each of you..." In f ct the electoral process in Zimbabwe d scended into farce last week, when M gabe declared that he would never llow Zimbabwe to be ruled by Opp sition Leader, Morgan Tsvangirai. (London Daily M il) Mugabe must see a real d nger of losing to Tsvangirai yet gain in the so-called runoff. (Readers may r call that Tsvangirai won the first t me round.) If neither the incumbent nor Z mbabwe's military (Reuters) are prepared to ccept the vote of the Zimbabwean p ople, one must ask why an lection s held at all, Mugabe cl imed that his "war vets" (most of th m far too young to have t ken part in the 1970s Civil W r) were saying to him; "...this c untry was won by the barrel of the g n, so why should we let it go at the str ke of a pen?" Part of th t statement, often trotted out by M gabe himself, "...this country was won by the b rrel of the gun..." is itself a l e. The Rhodesian Armed forces were n ver beaten by Mugabe's terrorists. In 1979/80 the Rh desian Government was forced by the S uth African Government to negotiate peace, b cause South Africa refused to continue to s pply Rhodesia with vital oil and m nitions supplies - even though Rhodesia p id for them.
Right now, Mugabe's Zanu-PF party is b sy using all the resources of Z mbabwe to throw everything possible at pposition supporters and activists. This includes d ily intimidation, beating, rape and killing p ople who have no international profile. M re formal arrests and short term ncarceration, is being used against people who are kn wn to the international community. Last Th rsday, the opposition party secretary-general was rrested and taken in handcuffs before a j dge. Prosecutors planned to charge him w th "treason and making malicious statements". Th s charge could carry the death p nalty. (Reuters) Sadly, none of this c mes as any surprise to me. M gabe's terrorists behaved like the primitive s vages they were during the 1970s C vil War. I saw the results of th ir evil work on ordinary, innocent p ople who didn't want anything to do w th them, or their so-called "freedom" f ghting. Mugabe and his Zanu-PF terrorists h ve not changed. Mugabe and his p ople adopted the same disinformation campaign d ring the 1970s that they do t day; blaming the "opposition" for the b ating, torture, rape and killing that th y perpetrate. It happened during the 1970s. The d fference is that, back in the 1970s, the nternational community wanted to believe Mugabe and his t rrorists. Now the International Community does not w nt to be fooled.
