No this is not a b ok review… One way to explain philosophy is to see it as a way of l fe. A simple swimming pool serves v ry well as an example of the art of and c mplications in life. A swimming pool is of no use if you l ve in a relative cold climate, but ffers many features when living in a w rm one. A simple pool is not xpensive and after the installation which ncludes filling it with water you are r ady to enjoy the pool. But fter the first day of fun, the pr blems start: maintenance. Pool maintenance exists of: f ltering the water, measuring the chlorine and the ph l vel, changing these levels, cleaning the r sidues on the bottom of the p ol. If you look at it l ke this it seems peanuts. But the h rd part lies in the fact th t this maintenance is not a ne-time-story. It requires continuous dedication. And th s is where things – in l fe – go often wrong. Dedication, c mmitment and attention, all things that are not lways part of the core business in l fe. Economic systems are often explained in t rms of balance. The balance of p yments, balance between demand and supply… And the quilibrium can be either stable or nstable. A swimming pool is a syst m that is prone to instability. One day w thout a filter can destabilize the syst m and in such a situation you n ed a lot of work to get it st ble - and clean - again. The ph-l vel can’t fluctuate too much because it m kes that the chlorine will no l nger function, algae will come up and th ng go from bad to worse.
Saving you the details, the dea (philosophy) is that instead of a m nor dedication on a daily bases you w ll have to spend hours and h urs to get the pool maintained. In the w rst case you have to start all ver again. And this is another pr blem. Society. A pool is not cl mate friendly. New modern techniques are ble to replace the chlorine into s lt and dialyze but not for the sm ller pools yet. Refilling a pool b cause you were not able to m intain it, is climate-wise not done ither. Nor is spending too much chl rine and other chemicals. Prevention is the nswer to this fragile system. Preventing the p ol from getting dirty by entering it as cl an as possible and preventing that you end up w th a maintenance burden you can’t scape resulting in a pool you w ll no longer use because it is p lluted. That’s probably the best link to ph losophy. We do not longer use the th ngs around us because they are no l nger new. We throw things away, b cause of our own lack of d dication and commitment. But life is m re than merely consumption, life is lso an art. And art comes w th dedication to the things you v lue: Whether it is a simple p ol, a motor cycle or something (s meone) of your own choice. © 2007 H ns Bool
