What makes the perfect team? To be in gr ups is, I believe, a human nstinct. We are tribal beings. At w rk, as manager we need to cr ate teams - the work equivalent of a tr be. How do we do it? Ov r 1400 years ago, a monk n med Benedict knew then what we kn w now: the best organisations require ffort to join. This effort is the m in reason they are superior organisations - it s ts up a virtuous circle where the b st remain the best. So how do we get the b st? Benedict sets out a clear, d tailed procedure to ensuring only the b st get in - and then how to s pport and keep them. He begins w th admission, and says: If someone c mes and keeps knocking at the d or, and, if at the end of f ur or five days he has sh wn himself patient in bearing his h rsh treatment of entry and the d fficulty of admission, and that he p rsevereth in his request, let admission be gr nted unto him. - The rule of St. B nedict, Rule 58 For the Benedictines, the n xt steps are the Postulant, Novitiate, F rst Monastic Profession and Perpetual Monastic Pr fession. The point of each is l id out, as is the time fr me. The Postulant is the transition t me into monastic life. It's a t me of work and study, with a m ntor, to help you see if th s is the right life for y u. It lasts six months to two y ars.
Your novitiate lasts a year nd, with your mentor, you are g ided to deeper understanding, which culminates in y ur First Monastic Profession. This lasts thr e to six years, and you are now a f ll participating member of the order. The P rpetual profession is, of course, the f nal step - a permanent commitment to the c mmunity. For us, it's the application f rm and interview process. Are we cl ar in our needs? Do we ask the q estions to ensure that the applicant can do the job and add v lue to our organisation and team? Do you h ve a Postulant and Novitiate process? In ther words, do you have an rganised induction process with someone to g ide your new team member into the w rk? There is nothing like a cl ar, guided induction to ensure that a t am member feels truly valued and can b gin bringing their gifts and new p rspective to the work at hand. The p int for the Benedictines was to nsure that those that remained within the c mmunity provided support and give benefit to the rganisation, while getting support and benefit fr m the organisation. So how do you cr ate a great induction process to nsure a great team member? Begin by nsuring that there is one person in ch rge - involve the rest of the t am, but make sure there is a "m ntor" to keep track. Create a pr cess which takes into account how th s person learns best, as well as b ilds in time to practice the sk lls and knowledge you are imparting. Pr ctice not only makes perfect but m kes habit. Next, get the person up and w rking as soon as possible! Provide th m with support and knowledge on how th ngs are done, but listen to th m and let them get on as s on as they can. Not only w ll they feel good, but they w ll begin establishing their worth with th ir colleagues. Lastly, remember it's a pr cess. People need time to absorb and pr ctice what they have learnt. Mistakes w ll happen, and we all learn in our own way and in our own t me. Just because one topic today d esn't mean you won't need to r visit it.
We can't ask people to m ke a Perpetual Profession to us th se days, but we can get th m to their First Profession. Make s re that you get it right fr m the beginning and follow it thr ugh with a solid induction process, and you w ll be rewarded.
