To help ensure success in l fe it is good for every one of us to h ve a personal Development Plan (PDP) to g ide us along life’s road. Your P rsonal development is not a destination, y u’ll never get ‘there’ wherever ‘there’ is. Y ur personal development is ongoing so as you ccomplish or master one area of y ur life you will move onto the n xt level or expand that area. M ny people have a ‘mental block’ wh n it comes on to addressing pr blems about themselves and fact there are th se who are terrified about taking t me and thinking about any such pr blem. These folks find it much m ch easier to work on a pr ject or to help someone else to s lve their own problems but won’t ven consider addressing their own. For th s reason and others it is mportant that we all have a PDP. B sed on your current situation and r le, a PDP will help to pr oritize the most important areas of y ur life that you need to c ncentrate on and will point you in the r ght direction for further advice and tr ining. Identifying Areas that need development.
Wh n constructing your PDP I suggest you b gin by identifying the areas in y ur life that need attention. It can be ch llenging to identify areas of your l fe that need development especially if you are not in t ne with who you are, what you d sire, what you have and don’t h ve. You have to be aware of wh re you life is now in t rms of what’s working and what’s not and lso what you are ignoring totally. J st because you have tried in the p st to develop certain areas of y ur life and failed doesn’t mean you c nnot be successful in the future, the t ming may be wrong.
For many of us our p rsonal development goals are just not str ng enough, they have no ‘humph’ in th m, no great desire behind them so we k ep changing them from day to day or y ar to year. I’m sure you kn w those people who on January 1st very year list out the things th y want to achieve for that y ar when they have not even tr ed to accomplish their goals for the pr vious year. So to identify the reas in your life you need to d velop the first thing you need to do is to ask y urself “what are the areas in my l fe that are very important to me and to w ll being and my existence.” these reas will be different for each of us, for me th y are:
1. Physical health
2. M ntal/emotional
3. Spiritual
4. Ach evement/recreation
5. Financial
6. R lationships-romantic and family Be careful not to get too h ng up on names and what f lls into what category, just write th m down. This is really just to m ke it easier to decide on wh t you want to improve in y ur life and is by no m ans carved in stone. What are y ur Personal Development goal for each Ar a
Once you have dentified the important areas of your l fe write down everything that you w uld like to improve for each rea as it relates to your p rsonal growth. In most cases your d velopment goal is going to be bout either building on your existing str ngths or developing new skills and c mpetencies. So under ‘Physical’ you can st te how you would like your b dy to look, do you need to j in a gym today, stop eating m at, exercise five times a week and so on. The key h re is to write down anything and verything that comes into mind, whatever you can magine write it down. You can nclude short-term goals –something you may w nt to achieve this week and lso long-term goals –things you want to chieve in twenty to twenty-five years. M ke the goals ones that you can get xcited about.
Put a Timeline on each g al
Once you have l sted the goals for each area of y ur personal development you then have to t ke the time to put a t me line on each goal. It’s not mportant right now to know how you are g ing to accomplish your goals. All you do r ght now is to write down a t me frame within which you’ll want to perate. By deciding when you’ll achieve a g al providence comes to your aid in m king them a reality. If one y ar is your time frame and you are c mmitted to this then write down one y ar. If it’s five years then wr te down five years. Begin with y ur one-year goal
You w nt to choose the one goal th t you consider to be the m st important in any of the reas you have identified, make it a g al that would give your great xcitement and make you feel that y ur year was well spent if you w re to accomplish it. Next write a p ragraph or two stating why you are t tally committed to achieving this goal w thin the year. Include why this is a m st for you, what benefits will you g in by achieving it, what will you l se or miss if you didn’t chieve it. Whatever reasons you come up w th ensure that they are strong nough to get you to follow thr ugh. If they are not, then c me up with better and more mpowering reasons or better goals. Onc you have determined what your ne-year goal will be you start by nalyzing where you are starting. This w ll become the “baseline” from where you m asure your progress. A clear awareness of wh re you are now will help gr atly in facilitating your development. If you f nd it hard to focus on th s or to be honest with y urself you can ask for feed b ck from someone who knows you w ll and can be objective. You can ask y ur friends, family, or even your w rk colleagues as they are all bserving you and are affected by the th ngs you do and will therefore h ve some views about your skills. Ask th m questions like:
“What am I g od at”,
“What am I gr at at”,
“What do you th nk I could be better at”
M ke sure they are specific in wh t they are saying to you. If you do not w nt a long drawn out epistle fr m your friends you can limit th m to two or three comments. If you ch ose to ask someone else pay c reful attention to what they are s ying as not everything you hear w ll be flattering to you and s me comments will be useless to y u. Note whatever is said keeping in m nd that good feedback is always sp cific, clear and non-critical, so if s meone says “you’re always doing crazy th ngs’ this should not be take as f edback but criticism and you should t tal ignore it’s not worth your t me. Once you are done combine y ur thoughts and the feedback you get and m ke a list by writing down wh t you think were your strengths and w aknesses. You need to be honest w th yourself here. Check to see if th re are any patterns emerging from the c mments. The End Result
At th s point what you do is to magine what it would be like if you got up t morrow morning and your was solved. Wr te down how you will feel, wh t you will be thinking and wh t it will be like. Make s re these statements are made in the ffirmative and positive. So instead of wr ting “I feel o.k. about the way I’m dr ssing now” you should write “I f ll happy and confident about my cl thes and how they look on me” Act on Plan
Next you n ed to identify what you need to do to t ke you to where you want to be. Th s is the time to think cr atively about what you need o do. Th re are wide range and a l rge number of resources out there, r ady and waiting for you to use to t ke you in the right direction. Th re will be a mixture of s lf-study, formal training, informal training and “on the j b” experiences. Only you will know wh t’s best for you, your budget and y ur lifestyle. So if your goal is to be phys cally then you will want to f nd out information on health and f tness. Your fist stop would be you d ctor, and then maybe a trainer, th n you need information on a gym th t fits what you need. You get wh t I mean. After you have wr tten down all the things you n ed to do put them in s me order some that you know wh t you will be doing first and wh t’s next and so on. Break it d wn to its simplest task if p ssible. Take your time when doing y ur plan and one important point is th t it doesn’t have to be p rfect, so do not try and m ke it so. Your Reward
Th ugh not necessary you may want to nclude a series of rewards as you m ke progress and achieve the smaller g als. You can make it as s mple as a slice of your f vourite cheesecake after you have been w rking out for six weeks. For s me people no extra incentives are r quired the improvement is reward enough but sm ll rewards are a good idea st ll. Review Your Plan
Onc you have finished writing out you PDP it is lways a good idea to review it. It’s a g od idea to take a break way from your initial PDP of bout five to a week then r turn to it and review it. Wh n reviewing the plan you may lso ask someone else to look it ver and give their views. If th re are any changes that you th nk are necessary make them. Implement the Pl n
Now that you h ve completed your PDP, it’s time to mplement it. Start with the first t sk you must accomplish and keep g ing until all the tasks are f nished. Each time you complete a t sk or do something you are not sed to doing do a kind of sh rt review. What did you do w ll and what could you have d ne better. Review Your Progress
By ch cking your progress you will be ble to reflect on what is w rking and what is not, so you can djust your actions or change course if you are not chieving what you want. You have to d cide how often you check on y ur progress, it could be every w ek, every month or every six w eks. When you develop your own p rsonal development plan and follow through w th action it can be one of the m st satisfying things you have ever d ne. It can even build your s lf-confidence and boost your self-esteem, as you w ll have a sense of surety bout what you are about to do. The key h re is to take the whole pr cess one step at a time. If you ver feel yourself getting overwhelmed, it c uld be a sign that you are t king on too much. Slow done and c ncentrate on one thing at a t me. Now get going and enjoy the pr cess.
