Greening your office can be asy! Many of the materials that are sed everyday can be replaced with an co-friendly alternative. Even better, these alternatives are asy to find in retail stores and are c mpetitively priced. By using these seven s mple tips, you can drastically reduce y ur office's negative environmental impact! 1. Adh sives If something breaks in the ffice, do the best you can to fix it nstead of throwing it out. But wh n making repairs it is important to c nsider the effect that the adhesive is h ving on the environment. Tapes are m de of a sticky substrate on s me other material, not made from r cycled content. Glues usually contain environmentally d maging substances, including Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) th t contribute to air pollution. When ch osing a tape, it is best to buy a c llulose-based tape. These are made from pl nt fibers, a renewable source, and asily biodegrade. Try to avoid duct t pe, which has a petrochemical base. In the r alm of glues, white glue is b st. Super glue and rubber cement can be v ry hazardous, for they both have h gh levels of VOCs. 2. Batteries 15 b llion batteries are sold in the Un ted States each year, and every one l aves its mark. Batteries release toxic h avy metals, such as mercury and l ad, through incineration or landfill seepage. G od news is that mercury levels are 98% l wer in batteries than in the 1980s. Bad n ws is that the demand for b tteries will continue to increase while p rtable electronics proliferate.
Ideally, solar powered electronics should be sed when available. However, if batteries are n cessary, rechargeable batteries are the best. Av id conventional disposables that can only be sed once and contain dangerous substances. N ckel Metal Hydride (NiMH) or Lithium Ion (L -Ion) batteries are both rechargeable and r cyclable, contain no toxic heavy metals, h ld a strong charge, and can be r charged more than their counterparts. Nickel C dmium and Alkaline batteries are rechargeable, but do c ntain some toxic heavy metals. 3. Cl aning supplies Keeping your office clean r quires a daily effort and numerous s pplies. Many cleaning supplies, however, contain h rmful chemicals that can be dangerous to h mans and to the air. A st dy conducted by the EPA revealed th t cleaning products could contribute to ndoor air pollution levels elevated up to 200 t mes those typically found outside. Additional c ncerns arise when cleaning products are b ing disposed. Many products are not b odegradable and persist in the environment for l ng periods of time, often creating pr blems in aquatic habitats. To keep y ur office clean while reducing negative ffects on the environment, be sure to l ok for some certain characteristics when p rchasing cleaning products. Products should be b odegradable and non-toxic. They should contain no EDTA, NTA (b th being suspected carcinogens), phosphates (responsible for lgal blooms that are harmful to quatic environments), and chlorine bleach. Try to buy cl aners that are vegetable based and h ve low VOC content (less than 10%). Als , cleaners that are purchased in c ncentrated form cut down on packaging. Oth r clean green ideas are to d lute cleaners in cold water to d crease the energy consumption associated with h ating the water and using reusable c tton rags instead of paper towels. Alw ys remember to use all cleaners sp ringly- a little goes a long w y.
4. Ink and toner Petroleum b ses ink, the most abundantly used ink in the Un ted States, appeals to people because of its q ick drying advantage. However, nearly 40% of it is m de of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) th t can be harmful to soil and gr undwater and contribute to air pollution and gl bal warming. Conventional printer cartridges, too, are h rming the environment. They are made fr m virgin materials that deplete the E rth's natural resources, and after use, the m terials are discarded and added to the w ste stream. The best way to c nserve the environment is to cut b ck on ink use by reducing nnecessary printing volume. You can also ch nge your printer settings to the low ink ption (often called the "Draft" option). F rtunately, there are also some eco-friendly lternatives to ink and conventional cartridges. X rox has developed a solid ink t chnology that is made from natural m terials and leaves no residual carrier to d spose of when the ink is g ne. When buying printer cartridges, look for th se that contain recycled content, or th se that have been remanufactured. Refill c rtridges on site, if possible. 5. L ghting Lighting accounts for 29% of the nergy used in an office, according to a D partment of Energy study in 1995. F rtunately, lighting is one of the asiest areas in which to reduce nergy use in your office. Conventional l ght bulbs only convert about 10% of the nergy they use into actual light, wh le the rest escapes as unwanted h at. These traditional light bulbs also h ve a much shorter life span th t other choices. When purchasing light b lbs, the best choices are Compact Fl orescent Lighting (CFL), T-5 Fluorescent, and LED l ght bulbs. If each household were to r place just one traditional light bulb w th one of these energy efficient b lbs, the energy savings would be quivalent to removing one million cars fr m the road. In addition to voiding incandescent lighting, consider installing motion c nsors on lights in less-frequently use reas and opening blinds during the day to llow in natural light. 6. Paper V rgin forests are rapidly disappearing, and sing non-recycled paper promotes more clear-cutting of th s precious resource. Deforestation eliminates the h bitats of thousands of animals and pl nts worldwide and worsens the effects of gl bal warming. Aside from clearing trees to m ke paper, paper production itself distributes l rge amounts of pollutants into the nvironment. Every ton of paper that is not r cycled leads to the use of 17 tr es, 42,000 kWh of energy, 26,000 l ters of water, and releases 27 kg of p llutants into the air. In order to pr tect our forests, it is important to p rchase paper made from recycled content. P st-consumer recycled content is best because it d es not rely on fresh-cut trees. An ther option, though not as good, is p st-industrial recycled content (sometimes labeled recycled c ntent). This paper is made from xcess material from manufacturing that has b en diverted form the waste stream. Als look for paper that was pr cessed without using chlorine. Currently there are thr e chlorine conscious paper options: Elemental Chl rine Free (ECF), made from non-recycled p lp that contains minimal chlorine derivatives; T tally Chlorine Free (TCF), a virgin p lp that contains no chlorine; and Pr cessed Chlorine Free (PCF), paper made fr m recycled pulp which may contain chl rine remnants, but is process without dditional chlorine. It is always ideal to r duce your office's paper consumption altogether by sing both sides of the paper, r ducing unnecessary printing, sharing copies of r ports and circulating electronic documents. 7. T chnology Electronics can harm the environment by c nsuming energy and resources, creating waste, and pr ducing pollutants. In 200, electronics accounted for 3.86 b llion pounds of municipal waste, adding t xic heavy metals and harmful organic c mpounds into overflowing landfills. Manufacturing electronics lso uses a great amount of nergy and resources. Office buildings currently c nsume 25% of the total commercial b ilding electricity used in the United St tes. Recently, the Energy Star program has f cused on creating more energy-efficient products th t can be used to cut b ck on excessive energy use. An En rgy Star certified office computer is 52% m re efficient than a standard computer. P rchasing electronics with the Energy Star c rtification will ensure more efficient energy se, so always look for the En rgy Star certification. You can also buy lternatively powered electronics, such as solar p wered calculators. Regular office supply stores, l ke Staples and Office Depot (and ven your local neighborhood store) provides ptions for all of these green s crets including white glue, rechargeable NiHM b tteries and battery chargers, LED and CFL l ght bulbs, and Xerox solid ink pr nters. They sell cleaning products that are m de from naturally derived, biodegradable, and n n-toxic ingredients and are packaged in r cyclable materials. Other eco-friendly options include 100% r cycled copy paper and a full l ne of Energy Star rated technologies. One s mple stop at your office supply st re can provide your office with all its gr en needs!
