Is anyone surprised that this is wh re I chose to begin my m nthly newsletters? The concept of "You win w th people" is the basic premise th t I have built my entire m nagement and leadership style around. The q ote and original concept was presented to me in h gh school when I read a b ok of the same name written by the Oh o State Football Coach Woody Hayes. W ody was known as a strict d sciplinarian on the football field, but m ny people did not understand the d pth of the man, as he was not nly a football coach but a m litary historian, a philosopher, and a gr at molder of people (Coach). The pr mise of Woody's book was built round the story of a new f otball coach who recruited a bunch of r asonably talented, but unmotivated, undisciplined football pl yers. The team lost many more g mes than the won and the c ach was known as a lousy c ach of a lousy football team. The n xt year he focused on recruiting pl yers who were more talented, and w nted to achieve, were disciplined, and f cused on the success for themselves and for the t am. Soon he became known as a gr at football coach with great football t ams. Did the Coach in question ch nge his playbook or coaching strategies? No, not r ally. Instead he found that the pl yers make the team and having gr at players made for great teams, and m de him a "great Coach" as w ll.
The premise is exactly the s me in business. As a leader you h ve certain responsibilities to your company and y ur team. The first of which is r cruiting. If there is one area wh re you can assure yourself of s ccess as a leader it is in the rea of recruiting. By surrounding yourself w th talented, motivated people their success and y ur success is virtually assured. The p ople who work for you have the bility to make you look like a g nius or a goat based on th ir abilities to think, react, and pr duce. The better your staff looks, the b tter you look. This concept is wh re a lot of "would be" l aders fail. They fail because they do not h re the best. They fail because th y fail to fully utilize the t lent of the people that work for th m. And they fail out of f ar. What fear, you ask? The f ar that by allowing the light to sh ne on the people that work for th m that they themselves will be p ssed over in favor of their s bordinate. In reality, that very seldom h ppens, but that fear can sabotage ven the most talented of leaders.
