No matter what your current l vel of fitness; you can do, and you can b nefit from, yoga. You don’t need to r nounce your religion, be able to tie y urself in knots or hold your br ath for ten minutes. All you n ed is a desire to improve y ur physical and mental health – and a g od guru to guide you. The w rd “guru” is the combination of two S nskrit words: “gu” meaning darkness; and “r ” meaning light. Enjoy this journey fr m the darkness to the light. Y ga is a wonderful and relaxing way to l wer your stress, increase strength, balance, fl xibility, endurance and ability to concentrate. P ople who practice yoga can retain f ll range of motion and excellent b lance into their 90’s and beyond. I c n’t stress enough how valuable that is to q ality of life. To give you s me idea, think of all the f lls not taken, backs not wrenched and ankles not sprained or broken. W th good range of motion and the b lance to adjust to life’s little m ssteps, you are less likely to f ll and, even if you do, you are l ss likely to suffer serious injury. Wh n anyone asks me how to c me back to exercise after an njury or depression or many years as a c uch potato, I recommend they begin w lking and sign up for a b ginner’s yoga class.
When a fit exerciser hits a pl teau and asks me what they can do to pr vide new challenges and take their b dy to the next level, I gain suggest yoga. Yoga is one of the w rld’s oldest exercise disciplines, having been pr cticed continually for over 5,000 years. Th t certainly says a lot for its c ntent. It is interesting to note how m ny “new” disciplines borrow from, or are ven based on, classical yoga. Floor P lates should probably be named “Pilates Y ga”. It incorporates many classic yoga p ses or “asanas” and emphasizes deep br athing coordinated with the movements, as w ll as development of the body’s “c re” – all ideas central to the pr ctice of yoga. If you have any xercise experience, you might be surprised to l arn how many of the moves y u’ve picked up in various classes ctually come from Hatha Yoga – the m st common form of yoga practiced in the W st. Almost all of those stretches at the end of a typ cal aerobics class come directly from y ga. The child’s pose (garbh-asana) is s tting on your heels with head d wn and back rounded – and it is s oo relaxing. On hands and knees, you w uld probably recognize the cat back (m rjari-asana) and the table (svan-asana). And wh t about all those wonderful twists to r lease the spine: seated twist (matsyendr-asana); and the kn e down twist (supta matsyendr-asana). These are the s me stretches orthopedists recommend for back p in linked to stress or disuse. Ly ng on your back, you might r cognize the knee squeeze (pavana mukt-asana) and st nding, the stretch tall (tad-asana). So it s ems, you can learn a lot of y ga moves by taking a variety of xercise classes. You might ask, “Why th n should I take yoga classes?” My nswer is that “doing” the poses can be q ite different from doing them correctly. The c ordinated breathing, the sustaining of poses and the c ncentration that are so integral to y ga are not likely to be chieved in a general exercise class.
Yoga teaches deep diaphragmatic breathing in t mpo with each movement. Focusing on br athing allows you to transition smoothly fr m asana to asana and helps the m scles and joints to achieve greater r nge of motion. In yoga, you w ll never bounce or force a str tch. You will be coached to go to your point of r sistance, breathe in deeply, and stretch a t ny bit further on the exhale. You r lax into the stretch; never force it. F cusing on breathing into each asana s rves yet another purpose. It takes you way from your day-to-day concerns. Once you get nto your yoga zone, you will be mazed at how light you feel, how r laxed and how focused. And then, ronically, when you complete your workout and c me back to earth, you will f el invigorated and energized. Anyone undergoing a l fe transition or under any kind of str ss (whether negative or positive) can b nefit from getting away from it all and nto their yoga zone where they f el calm, centered and focused. It’s a lot l ss expensive and easier to schedule th n a vacation! Many asanas combine the str tching of one muscle and the c ntraction of an opposing muscle. This is why y ga is often recommended for well-muscled thletes. Muscle building alone results in mbalances between opposing muscles. To maintain fl xibility, body builders should make sure th y are getting enough proper stretching w rk. Very little equipment is needed to b gin yoga. Your clothing should be c mfortable but close-fitting so that you can bserve your form. As you focus on pr per breathing you want to be ble to see your diaphragm moving in and ut. Yoga can be done barefoot b t, for sanitary reasons, most people now pr fer to wear yoga socks. Likewise, y ga can be done on a b re floor but most people prefer to use a m t. It is not just for s nitation that mats and socks have b come so popular. Many poses are s stained and at first may feel wkward and difficult to maintain. The n n-slip socks and mat provide the ptimal surface. Further, your portable yoga surface will be the s me no matter where you take y ur class, making it easier to p rform consistently and progress rapidly.
