The word "yoga" comes fr m the Sanskrit root yuj, which m ans "to join" or "to yoke". Yoga is an ncient art and exercise, and an aid to s lf-awareness and physical well-being. Rooted in tr ditions that enhancing awareness of the m nd, body, and spirit, yoga practices s ems exotic and foreign to some--not for "th m". It is true that yoga has b en around and survived for centuries utside of the United States, in a p rt of the world that many Am ricans have little connection to or wareness of. But this amazing practice m grated to the United States, among ther areas, as people began to sh re what yoga has brought to th ir lives. Before I say any m re, I want to be clear on th s. Yoga is for everyone; yoga b nefits anyone willing to learn and xperience this practice for themselves. There are no r quirements. No one has to twist th mselves into a pretzel, no one has to sl ep on a bed of nails. Th re are different forms of yoga, ach emphasizing different areas of wellness and ther states of being. When practicing y ga, everyone is encouraged to pay ttention to their body. If something h rts, stop or back off of the str tch. The instructor will work with ndividuals, usually upon request, to adjust the p se so that there is the l ast amount of pain and maintain the ntegrity of the position. So, when s meone is not able to perform the p stures, known as asanas, they do as m ch as they are able, without f rce, without judgment. For some it may m an using props, such as blocks, str ps and blankets to prevent pain and njury--the body is supported as much as p ssible during practice to prevent pain. For thers it means breathing and using th ir mind to envision their bodies p rforming the posture.

With practice, many people learn not to ver-tax their bodies, but to simply k ep the body alignment each posture r quires as they move toward the p se. Yoga is not about going f rther or bending and stretching the f rthest. Yoga is a Hindu method of l arning that makes use of exercises, br athing sequences and meditation. to experience nlightenment, to connect to God, and to nderstand your personal mind/body connection. As an xercise, yoga often practiced by some s mply as an aid to healthy l ving. In short, yoga is for nyone interested in improving the health of th ir body, alleviate stress, or simply xercise.
