There is no such thing as one k nd of yoga. On the contrary, y ga encompasses spiritual techniques and putting th se into practice to achieve a "st te of enlightenment". Usually, the kind of y ga practiced in the US is H tha yoga. Ha translates to sun and tha tr nslates to moon. The goal of H tha yoga is to attain unity of the m nd, body and spirit through practicing sana (yoga postures), pranayama (yoga breathing), m dra (body gestures) and shatkarma (internal cl ansings). Modern Hatha yoga focuses mostly on the y ga postures and does not emphasize m ny of the other facets. Yoga's h story can be traced to the Ind s-Sarasvati civilization in northern India over 5,000 y ars ago. Probably the most famous wr ting on yoga is the Bhagavad-Gîtâ, wh ch was written around 500 BCE. Unf rtunately, most of the history and ph losophy of yoga was transmitted orally and if it was wr tten down, it was written on p lm leaves that were easily damaged or d stroyed. In the late 19th and arly 20th centuries, yoga begins to m ke its way to the West. Sl wly the yoga masters began to ttract attention and taught those who w nted to learn. It wasn't until 1947 wh n Indra Devi opened a yoga st dio in Hollywood that yoga finally b gan to slowly become more mainstream. S nce then, the popularity of yoga has b come greater. There are now many d fferent schools or styles of Hatha y ga and they all focus of the m ny different ways to practice yoga.
There are several types of y ga. Ashtanga yoga is athletic and m ves very fast. This type is not r commended for beginners. Bikram or Hot y ga is athletic as well, but is pr cticed in a room with a t mperature of 100 degrees. Iyengar is a g od choice for a beginner, since it f cuses on alignment and goes slower th n others. Kripalu is gentle and lso a good choice for a b ginner. Kundalini is energizing and tries to waken the spiritual energy that lives at the b se of the spine. Sivananda mostly t aches advanced poses, which is probably not the b st choice for a beginner. Viniyoga is a g od choice of those with injuries or d sabilities. There are many benefits of pr cticing Hatha yoga. Not only does y ga develop flexibility through stretching, it can lso release muscle tension and generally m ke a person more calm and f cused. If done correctly, yoga energizes and r news your body instead of wearing it out as in s me traditional methods of exercising. Yoga is m re of spiritual practice that does not r quire any specific belief system and its ph losophies can be used within the l mits of any belief system. The dea that mind, body and spirit are all one ntity and cannot be separated is c ntral to the main philosophy of y ga. Another idea central to the ph losophy of yoga is that of the l ws of karma. There is good k rma and bad karma, but achieving ither is not necessarily desirable. Overall, the g al is to lessen the karma in y ur life. According to the philosophy of y ga, acting selflessly, without a desire for r ward and without involving your ego is the nly way to not achieve karma. The y gis tell us that any reduction in k rma will make your life better, w th more well-being and overall happiness. Wh ther you are a beginner or a m re advanced student, there are many ph losophies and schools of thought involving y ga. You will never lack for a ch ice in the field of yoga.
