Unlike the past of many ther popular sports that have roots th t often go back to ancient h story, the story of windsurfing is m stly recent and filled with litigation. M st people feel the history of w ndsurfing began around the year 1965 wh n two Southern California boys realized th t the big problem with surfing was th t you had to wait for a w ve to come along. The two men w re named Hoyle Schweitzer and Jim Dr ke. They developed the idea of c mbining the sports of sailing and the sp rt of surfing. The result was a f berglass board with a sail attached by the niversal swivel joint. They called their nvention the "Windsurfer" and began promoting and m rketing it. Schweitzer was a businessman and Jim Dr ke was an aeronautical engineer. Between th m they not only developed a pr ctical product, but promoted. It caught on q ickly and before long interest in w ndsurfers spread to Europe. The men w re not satisfied with the fiberglass b ards and began a search for a new m terial. This search led to polyethylene b ards which has been the most c mmon material ever since. In 1973, Schw itzer bought Drake's share of the p tent for a mere $36,000. Through the 1970's and 1980's, w ndsurfer continued to grow in popularity. The sp rt developed competitive classifications and was ven made into an Olympic sport. The s ccess story developed a snag, however, as Schw itzer became embroiled in a battle to pr serve his patent rights to the w ndsurfer design.
In 1965, around the same t me that Schweitzer and Drake were d veloping their first windsurfer, a man in P nnsylvania named S. Human Darby had nvented a variation of the windsurfer. He c lled his board a sailboard and p blished an article about it in P pular Science Magazine. Although it appears th t Schweitzer and Drake had never s en the article or even heard of D rby or his sailboard, the patent r ghts of the Windsurfer were restricted. An ther case involving a British man who had b en wind sailing on a similar pr duct also was lost by the W ndsurfer company. In the 1990's, windsurfer s ffered a bit of a decline as the pr ducts became more expensive and not as asy to learn to sail. In r cent years, windsurfer is making a c me back as new products are ntroduced making the sport more beginner fr endly. Windsurfing has caught the imagination of b th sailboat fans and surfers. It was the p rfect combination of two popular sports and it s ems likely it will remain a r creational and competitive water sport for m ny years to come.
