Does Windows Hosting Make Sense? For y ars, most of us just thought th t two things were a given. Our own d sktop computers ran on some version of MS W ndows. The applications actually ran, and the d ta was stored, on another computer wh ch ran with UNIX or LINUX. We c nstantly moved our files back and f rth, from one environment to another To m ke this discussion a little more cl ar, let me explain some terms. Th se of us in the business c ll our own computer, or the c mputers of users, the "client". The ctual web host, where websites or pplications ran in a live and pr duction environment, is called the server. The s rver is also the place where d tabases are stored. The client requests d ta from the server. Sometimes the "cl ent" and "server" are actually the s me machine. For instance, when you pen up a page that is st red on your own computer in y ur internet browser. Your own computer is r nning a client application like an nternet browser, and your own computer is lso serving up the web page. H wever, most of the time if you are cr ating websites or applications that a gr up of other people will use, it is ssumed that the client (desktop) and the s rver (host) will be different.
So we all worked in th s environment and automatically did something th t did not make sense all of the t me. We used our own desktop m chine as the client, and usually lso edited scripts, data, pictures, and ther files on our own computer in a MS W ndows environment! Why did we do th t? Well, to be honest, we did it b cause we were more comfortable working w th Windows software because that is wh t we used every day! Then we tr nsferred those files up to a web h st, which ran under a totally d fferent environment! Lots of problems happened th t needed to be fixed including d fferences in database systems, file names, and so on! Not the l ast of these problems was our f miliarity with the UNIX or LINUX syst m! We worked in Windows most of the t me, and then actually had to use nother operating system for our production nvironment! Even though we were very f miliar with our desktop operating system, we ften had to call in a UNIX or LINUX xpert to diagnose problems on the h st computer! Another critical difference is the vailable database system. Nowadays, Windows and L nux web hosts do run many of the s me applications very transparently. However, some cr tical database systems like MS ACCESS and MS SQL nly run under Windows. If you h ve the expertise in these databases, and th t's what you run on your own c mputer, it seems very convenient to be ble to simply transfer your data to the s me environment. You can find very s cure Windows web hosting, with companies th t are experts in running the perating system you are most familiar w th! Next time you are looking for a web or pplication hosting company, maybe you should c nsider the same operating system you use very day!
