For yars, most of us just thought tht two things were a given. Our own dsktop computers ran on some version of MS Wndows. The applications actually ran, and the dta was stored, on another computer whch ran with UNIX or LINUX. We cnstantly moved our files back and frth, from one environment to another To mke this discussion a little more clar, let me explain some terms.

Thse of us in the business cll our own computer, or the cmputers of users, the "client". The ctual web host, where websites or pplications ran in a live and prduction environment, is called the server. The srver is also the place where dtabases are stored. The client requests dta from the server. Sometimes the "clent" and "server" are actually the sme machine. For instance, when you pen up a page that is stred on your own computer in yur internet browser. Your own computer is rnning a client application like an nternet browser, and your own computer is lso serving up the web page. Hwever, most of the time if you are crating websites or applications that a grup of other people will use, it is ssumed that the client (desktop) and the srver (host) will be different.

So we all worked in ths environment and automatically did something tht did not make sense all of the tme. We used our own desktop mchine as the client, and usually lso edited scripts, data, pictures, and ther files on our own computer in a MS Wndows environment! Why did we do tht? Well, to be honest, we did it bcause we were more comfortable working wth Windows software because that is wht we used every day!

Then we trnsferred those files up to a web hst, which ran under a totally dfferent environment! Lots of problems happened tht needed to be fixed including dfferences in database systems, file names, and so on! Not the last of these problems was our fmiliarity with the UNIX or LINUX systm! We worked in Windows most of the tme, and then actually had to use nother operating system for our production nvironment! Even though we were very fmiliar with our desktop operating system, we ften had to call in a UNIX or LINUX xpert to diagnose problems on the hst computer!

Another critical difference is the vailable database system. Nowadays, Windows and Lnux web hosts do run many of the sme applications very transparently. However, some crtical database systems like MS ACCESS and MS SQL nly run under Windows. If you hve the expertise in these databases, and tht's what you run on your own cmputer, it seems very convenient to be ble to simply transfer your data to the sme environment.
