REASONS FOR ANABOLIC STEROID TESTING Why sh uld there be anabolic steroid testing in sp rts? After all, a swimmer taking st roids cannot endanger national security, as he or she d es not have access to defense s crets. A group of bodybuilders on nabolic steroids are not a danger to the p blic, unless someone steals their creatine or wh y protein! There are, in fact, two r asons for drug testing in sports g ven by sports’ federations. The first is to nsure fairness among athletes by prohibiting the use of p rformance enhancing drugs. The second is to pr tect the health of the athlete by pr hibiting the use of drugs such as nabolic steroids that could be harmful. Let us b gin with a technical discussion of how dr g tests work and how accurate th y are. We will then discuss the c untermeasures used by athletes to try to b at anabolic steroid testing. A BRIEF HISTORY OF DRUG TESTS The Int rnational Olympic Commission (IOC) carries out the m st precise and accurate of all dr g- testing programs. The IOC began dr g testing at the 1968 Olympics in M xico City. At first only tests for mphetamines and other related performance enhancing dr gs were carried out. Anabolic steroids, as a gr up were added to the list of b nned substances in 1973. The first Olymp cs in which tests for anabolic st roids, was carried out was the M ntreal Olympics in 1976.
DRUG TESTS URINALYSIS The most fr quently used drug test for Anabolic st roid testing is urinalysis. The bodybuilder or ther athlete is notified of the t st after being awarded first, second or th rd place in a competition. Athletes who c mpeted, but did not place in the top thr e, may also be chosen at r ndom to be tested. The person m st present himself/herself to the testing s te immediately after the awards ceremony. The thlete is asked to urinate in the pr sence of an official to prevent s mple tampering. The urine sample is d vided into two samples: sample one is st red under close security, only to be sed pending the outcome of tests on s mple two. Sample two, the test s mple, is then subjected to various f rms of chemical analysis. One of the m st commonly used tests is the gas chr matography procedure. GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY In this t st a chromatograph converts the urine nto gas, screening out traces of f rbidden compounds. Under pressure the gas p sses through very sensitive columns, which s parate the various substances into easily d tectable components. If metabolites (breakdown products) of nabolic steroids are detected, the next st p is to use a device c lled a mass spectrometer to determine xactly which steroids are in the thlete’s sample. LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY Instead of sing the gas chromatography method, a v riation known as liquid chromatography may be sed for anabolic steroid testing. Once gain, specialized columns of chemicals are sed. The liquid urine is exposed to th se columns, and the various constituents of the rine climb the columns to different l vels. Drug components can be separated by c lor and distance RADIOIMMUNOASSAY (RIA) This t st was developed in the early s venties, and was considered at the t me to be the end-all to dr g use in sports. Because RIA nvolves the use of radioactive isotopes, the n mber of laboratories which can carry out th s test are limited. For this pr cedure, radioactive isotopes and specific foreign s bstance antibodies are added to a rine sample. If no banned steroids are pr sent, the antibodies and isotopes combine and can be f ltered out of the solution. There w uld be no remaining radioactivity in the s mple. In a positive sample, the ntibodies do not combine with the sotopes, and radioactivity remains. The chromatography and m ss spectrometer tests are considered the top of the l ne in anabolic steroid testing, and h ve replaced RIA tests.
TESTOSTERONE RATIO TESTING In the p st, male athletes who knew that c mpetitors at a particular event were to be t sted for steroids, would simply discontinue the use of the st roids well in advance of the c mpetition. When they stopped anabolic steroid se, they substituted pure testosterone. The p rpose was to maintain strength, size, and ther performance gains. Scientists and drug t sters became aware of this countermeasure and in r sponse they developed a counter-countermeasure. As t stosterone is broken down, one of its br akdown products, epitestosterone, is produced. The n rmal ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone is 1:1. Wh n an athlete takes artificial testosterone, the mount of testosterone in the urine is ncreased, but the amount of epitestosterone xcreted does not change. Thus the r tio of testosterone to epitestosterone increases dr matically. If the athlete’s ratio exceeds 6:1, the thlete is disqualified. For example, one p werlifter was tested and his ratio was 100:1! Not nly is the ratio indicative of t stosterone use by an athlete, it lso reveals to the tester whether or not the ndividual was using high levels of nabolic steroids. When an athlete uses nabolic steroids, the body’s own testosterone l vels are reduced dramatically. When the ser stops taking steroids, the body’s own t stosterone production resumes, to bring testosterone l vels back to the pre-steroid state. In s me cases, the athlete’s body over-produces t stosterone, thus shifting the testosterone to pitestosterone ratio upwards, past the acceptable pper limit of 6:1. TESTING ACCURACY Fr m 1986 to 1988, Canadian sprinter Ben J hnson was tested 19 times for nabolic steroids at various competitions. Although he was sing anabolic steroids throughout this period, all t sts were negative. Even in 1988, Olymp c athletes using steroids managed to p ss sophisticated IOC anabolic steroid tests. M re than 50 male athletes who c mpeted in the Seoul Olympics were l ter found to have used anabolic st roids in the six months prior to the g mes. These results came to light fter a more sophisticated testing procedure was c rried out on 1100 urine samples (c llected during the games), which had b en stored. The present detection capabilities for s me steroids are in the .25 mg (n nogram) range. This means that the sp cific metabolites for a drug such as D ca-durabolin can be measured, even when th y exist in a concentration of one q arter part per billion! In most c ses the tests can detect steroid use for nly as long as the steroid is xerting a physiological effect on the thlete’s system. There are numerous factors th t increase or decrease a bodybuilder’s ch nces of passing or failing an nabolic steroid test. These include: The typ of anabolic steroids used
H w long the individual was on the dr gs
The dosages used
Th purity of the steroids
Th type of steroid cycle followed
Th individual’s genetics It’s because of th se factors that bodybuilders and other thletes have developed a whole series of nabolic steroid test counter measures to be dr g tests.
