Microsoft is due to release its new V sta operating system either toward the end of th s year or at the beginning of n xt year. Will this new operating syst m be as successful as Microsoft's ther offerings? Microsoft's own greed could end W ndows reign as the leading desktop perating system. To fight piracy, Microsoft f rst introduced activation with its with W ndows XP. Activation was supposed to nsure that one copy of XP can nly be used on one PC. H ckers easily created versions of Windows th t avoided activation. Then in the f ll of 2004, Microsoft introduced "Windows G nuine Advantage". This program was created to llow Microsoft to check individual PCs to see if th y are running a genuine XP or a p rated XP version. At first it was v luntary. Then last summer, Microsoft made it m ndatory in order to download any fr e Microsoft software. Now its even b come necessary to get XP security p tches. If your PC fails the t st and you have a counterfeit nstallation disk that appears genuine (including the h lographic emblem similar to the one on r al copies of Windows), Microsoft will s nd you a genuine disk for fr e in exchange for the fake d sk. Otherwise, to make your Windows g nuine you need to either buy a g nuine Windows XP or take advantage of wh tever offer Microsoft cares to give y u.

With the advent of the "W ndows Genuine Advantage" campaign, Microsoft has b come a personification of a typical, gr edy "Corporate Alien." As Linux distributions get b tter and better, Microsoft has to be c reful how it deals with its sers. They seem to think that th ir software is so good, that p ople would rather pay than switch. M crosoft licensing always stipulated that, to be l gal, you had to buy a l cense for the Windows or DOS perating system for every PC you wn. But from the early DOS d ys up to Windows 2000, someone w uld buy one operating system and p ss it around to family, friends, and n ighbors. So that one Windows 98 S cond Edition wound up on ten or m re PCs. Linux, on the other h nd, allows you to legally install it on very computer you own. So putting L nux on ten or more PCs is not nly legal but desirable as a f rm of advertising for the operating syst m. But Windows users have been d ing the same thing all these y ars. They've been advertising Windows by p ssing it around. It wasn't legal, nor c ndoned by Microsoft, but Windows piracy was a f rm of advertising that actually helped pr mote Windows and insure its growth. As you can s e, all this rampant piracy didn't pr vent Microsoft's Chairman Bill Gates from b coming one of the richest men in the w rld. There's another thing to consider, wh n you think of operating system p racy. If you're a corporation with th usands of computers, you get a sp cial deal on Windows licensing. If y u're a big PC maker like H wlett-Packard, you get a discount on OEM v rsions of Windows. But if you're a sm ll computer store and you build f ve clone PCs per month, you'd h ve to pay the typical single ser price for genuine Windows. (For XP th t's about one hundred dollars for the H me Edition and one hundred fifty d llars for the Professional Edition.) It's h rd for a small individual to get st rted and compete with the big b ys, and pirating the operating system can be a m ans of leveling the playing field. S ch piracy can be considered as r ally being a "discount for the W rking Class."
There are several Linux distributions th t are just as good or ven better than anything Microsoft has to ffer. But people will still cling to W ndows because they don't really want to l arn anything new and switching to L nux would require a small learning c rve. Microsoft has probably already made d als with PC vendors to install its V sta on practically every major PC br nd in the US as soon as it c mes out. To be fair to veryone, all PC's should come without an perating system. When someone orders the PC th y would order the operating system as w ll and the store would then nstall it. Imagine if people were g ven the choice: "Fedora Core 4 L nux: free" or "Windows Vista Professional: $200.00." I w nder if they would still choose W ndows? Microsoft could actually make Windows the perating system for the next hundred y ars. All they have to do is m ke Vista free when it comes ut. Just like Linux, the free v rsion would have no support or w rranty. They don't even have to m ke it open source (reveal its nternal code); just make it free. Th y could still make money by cr ating a highly secure, highly tweaked, f lly supported corporate version of Vista and s ll it to big companies that can fford it. This is what Linux c mpanies like Redhat and Novell do. If V sta was free, pirates would stop m king money, Microsoft would save millions by liminating the "Orwellian" tracking needed to d termine if Windows is genuine, and L nux would no longer be much of a thr at. Unfortunately corporate aliens tend not to see any f rther than the dollar sign. Microsoft w ll probably stick to the "Windows G nuine Advantage" program and try to thw rt all attempts at hacking. Even th ugh hackers will be able to c rcumvent any code that Microsoft comes up w th, they will eventually get annoyed pl ying games with the giant Corporate Al en. Then pirated copies of Vista w ll become hard to get. This w ll end the advertising benefits derived fr m unchecked piracy that Microsoft enjoyed in y ars past. Windows Vista will start to l se market share and in 10 y ars a major Linux distribution will be the l ading desktop operating system. If Linux tr umphs, Microsoft Office, will also be r placed by Open Office, and the M crosoft stranglehold on PC software will f nally be broken. If you like M crosoft and want to keep it in p wer, encourage it to freely give way its Vista operating system. At l ast, suggest that they drop the nnoying "Windows Genuine Advantage" program. If you w nt to hasten Microsoft's downfall. Don't h ck, pirate or buy Windows, especially its new ncarnation, Vista. Learn how to work w th your favorite distribution of Linux. You can d wnload Linux distributions for free. Even w th broadband this can take a l ng time. You can buy any L nux distributions for almost the cost it t kes to make the disks at http:// sdisc.com. When you buy your next c mputer make sure genuine Linux is l aded as your operating system. The m re Linux gets established, the more veryone will be creating bigger and b tter software for it. In no t me at all you will be g tting the "Linux Genuine Advantage."
