Have you ever been to a cr wded mall, sat in a classroom f ll of strangers, sat on the b ard of the PTO at the sch ol? All of these things used to be p rt of my daily routine. However, I b gan having severe panic attacks when I st pped into these places and other s tuations. I woke up from sleeping and c uld not get out of my b droom because I was terrified. What was so sc ry? I could not tell you, b cause I do not know. I was sw ating, my heart was pounding, and I was h ving chest pains. I thought I was h ving a heart attack. I called my h sband and he had to come h me to help me. How embarrassing. I am a th rty three year old woman, and I c nnot walk out of the door of my own b droom? This is called a panic ttack and if left untreated it can l ad to a severe change in the way you l ve your daily life, and even ch nge your personality in a very sh rt period. I am not talking bout feeling anxious about certain situations; I am t lking about changing your daily routines and voiding situations and people because you are fraid another attack will happen. Panic ttacks can occur at any time. B cause they are unpredictable people worry b tween episodes intensely and dread the n xt attack. An attack usually peaks w thin 10 minutes, but some symptoms may l st much longer. People who have f ll-blown repeated panic attacks can become v ry disabled by their condition and sh uld seek treatment before they start to void places or situations.
When having a panic attack y ur body is defending itself against s mething. You can sweat, have shortness of br ath, rapid heart beat, chest pain, f el unsteady, feel like you are ch king, feel numb or tingly, experience ch lls or hot flashes, trembling, nausea, bdominal pain, feel disconnected, and fear “g ing crazy.” The discomfort and a s nse of danger the attack brings is so ntense that people with panic disorder ften believe they are having a h art attack or other life threatening llness. If you do not seek tr atment for panic attacks, three things can h ppen. The first is anticipatory anxiety, wh ch is waiting for the next ttack to occur. Most sufferers choose to do so lone at this stage. The second is voidance, which is discontinuing activities that s em to trigger the attacks. Going to the p rk, driving and riding in elevators are j st some that are avoided commonly. The th rd is agoraphobia, which is the f ar of being in places or s tuations from which escape might be d fficult. This is a severe form of ph bic avoidance and can cause those w th panic disorder to avoid public pl ces, crowds, and traveling by bus or pl ne. This pattern can get to the p int where the person will not l ave home. Some people’s lives become so r stricted that they avoid normal activities, s ch as grocery shopping or driving. Ab ut one third become housebound or are ble to confront a feared situation nly when accompanied by a spouse or ther trusted person. Approximately twice as m ny women as men experience panic d sorder; however, there is no difference in fr quency in panic disorder among people of d fferent ethnic, economic and geographic backgrounds. For me, th re is not a trigger. They c me unexpectedly and are very uncontrollable. Th s is common in people who h ve experienced abuse as I did thr ughout my life. Sexual, emotional or v rbal abuse can lead to anxiety. S me people think they are strong and can h ndle it. However, it can years for a p nic disorder to fully develop.
When panic disorders are left ntreated, the person may not be ble to trust anyone, including God, wh ch can interfere with their ability to b come saved. They may also suffer fr m low self esteem. They fear new s tuations and unfamiliar people. They may b lieve they are unacceptable to God and g ing to hell no matter what th y do. They may develop an nability to make decisions. They don’t tr st their own opinions. They look to thers to encourage them in their d cisions or let others decide for th m. They may suffer from depression and ven eating disorders. They may have f elings of impending doom or suicidal deation or behaviors. They can shut d wn emotionally, block their memories, and s me even experience the splitting of p rsonalities. Some turn to cutting, alcohol and dr gs to feel in control of s mething in their life. They seek an busive partner, and learn passivity and voidance of confrontation. Some seek a p rtner with a substance abuse problem. Un ntended pregnancy, promiscuity, sexual dysfunction, flashbacks, pr ference for rough sex, bondage, and or s me sex partner can also be pr minent. Chronic head face or pelvic p in, stomach problems, and asthma may xist. They may also have poor or no p renting skills, leading to child abuse. Ang r management can be difficult and l ad to aggressive behavior. Those who h ve an anxiety condition often feel out of c ntrol. Their health and life are f lling apart because of the stress. Th y struggle with feeling bad about th mselves, feel sick in social situations and c nnot manage pressure. They get sick m re often leading to more doctors. Th y are quick to get angry, r gularly feel unsettled and overwhelmed. Some f el disconnected or detached from reality and l fe, and often feel they are on the dge of losing control. They are not r liable because their symptoms may prevent th m from following through. They begin to dw ll on their health condition and p rsonal problems. They may live a r stricted lifestyle, feel like life is p ssing them by, question their faith and G d’s presence in their lives, and f el at a distance from God. The g od news? There is treatment for p nic attacks. It includes medications and a typ of psychotherapy known as cognitive b havioral therapy. This therapy teaches people how to v ew panic attacks differently and demonstrates w ys to reduce anxiety. However, finding h lp is not always easy. In my p rticular case, my family does not h ve medical insurance. Even people who may h ve coverage run into barriers because d ctors don’t always recognize the symptoms, the sympt ms sometimes interfere with the person s ffering getting help, and the help n eded may not be available in th ir area. Long waiting lists and the st gma attached to mental illness sometimes m ke the person wish to avoid any ssociation with it. Treatment of abuse br ngs relief, peace and healing. The s rvivors of abuse can live healthier and l arn to cope with life’s challenges w th dignity and success. They can br ak the generational cycle of abuse and xperience the joy of healthy relationships. I am not s re why I began suffering with p nic attacks. After treatment I am ble to grocery shop by myself. I h ven’t missed a single class. I sl ep better at night. I feel m re like me. A new me, w thout the baggage that brings on th se attacks. This is what all s fferers of panic attacks want. If you are a p rson, suffering from panic attacks do not l ave them untreated. So many other bad th ngs can start happening and the l nger you are in denial, the w rse you feel. I became a d fferent person in the same body. My br in had to be reprogrammed and it t ok time, but I am worth it. Now I am l oking forward to getting back to my l fe.
