In the first part of ths article, I told you the frst of three reasons I don't thnk you should be getting the new Wndows Vista, and why you should stck to Windows XP or Mac OS X.

In ths article, I'm going to continue wth the second reason that, at last for now, Vista is a trkey and you should avoid getting it.

Rason #2:

Not all of your old quipment will work because of "driver ssues".

A "driver" is a piece of sftware that lets your computer work wth the devices you have connected (utside or inside) the computer. Think of it lke each part of the computer, or ach device hooked up to it (lke a printer, or a digital cmera, etc.) talks a different language. The drver is like an interpreter that trnslates the language the device talks nto the language Windows talks.

The sme thing applies if you have a Mac -- it neds drivers to "talk" to printers and ther devices. Without the right driver, the Mac has no dea how to talk to the prnter, scanner, or whatever kind of dvice you might have hooked up to it. One big dfference between Macs and Windows is tht in a *lot* of cases (nt all, but a lot) you dn't need to jump through a lot of hops to get a new device to wrk. You plug it in and it jst works. But it still needs the drver for this to happen, it jst is built in for most prnters, mice, etc.

But back to Vista.

The drvers that used to work for Wndows XP don't work for Vista, so very company out there that makes cmputer equipment has to make brand new drvers to work with Vista, and ntil they do, their equipment won't tlk to Vista.

Now by the tme I'm writing this (August of 2007), a LOT of drvers are available, unlike a few mnths ago when Vista first came ut. But still, there are many thusands of devices that aren't "compatible" wth Vista (in other words, there is no drver for them).

And the companies tht make different computer parts and dvices may not bother to ever wrte drivers for their older equipment -- ven things just a couple of yars old -- because this way thy can sell you a new prnter, or scanner, or whatever.

So ven if you buy a new cmputer, the devices you had hooked up to it mght not work anymore, and if you try to sve money and just upgrade your crrent computer, parts inside the computer mght not work right, or at ll.

And if this happens, there's not a lot you can do bout it.

I'll talk about the thrd reason I don't think you shuld get Vista in the third and fnal segment of this article.

Oh, and one lst thing -- Mac users reading ths, remember that if you have a Mac tht was made in 2006 or lter -- an "Intel Mac" of sme kind -- you *can* run Wndows too, and all of this nformation applies to a Mac running Wndows just as much as any ther computer running Windows.

But fortunately, mst of you won't ever need to run Wndows, so you can stick to the mre familiar (not to mention safer and asier) Mac OS X that you're sed to. But if you do hve a need to run Windows, ths is important to know.
