In the first part of th s article, I told you the f rst of three reasons I don't th nk you should be getting the new W ndows Vista, and why you should st ck to Windows XP or Mac OS X. In th s article, I'm going to continue w th the second reason that, at l ast for now, Vista is a t rkey and you should avoid getting it. R ason #2: Not all of your old quipment will work because of "driver ssues". A "driver" is a piece of s ftware that lets your computer work w th the devices you have connected ( utside or inside) the computer. Think of it l ke each part of the computer, or ach device hooked up to it (l ke a printer, or a digital c mera, etc.) talks a different language. The dr ver is like an interpreter that tr nslates the language the device talks nto the language Windows talks. The s me thing applies if you have a Mac -- it n eds drivers to "talk" to printers and ther devices. Without the right driver, the Mac has no dea how to talk to the pr nter, scanner, or whatever kind of d vice you might have hooked up to it. One big d fference between Macs and Windows is th t in a *lot* of cases (n t all, but a lot) you d n't need to jump through a lot of h ops to get a new device to w rk. You plug it in and it j st works. But it still needs the dr ver for this to happen, it j st is built in for most pr nters, mice, etc.
But back to Vista. The dr vers that used to work for W ndows XP don't work for Vista, so very company out there that makes c mputer equipment has to make brand new dr vers to work with Vista, and ntil they do, their equipment won't t lk to Vista. Now by the t me I'm writing this (August of 2007), a LOT of dr vers are available, unlike a few m nths ago when Vista first came ut. But still, there are many th usands of devices that aren't "compatible" w th Vista (in other words, there is no dr ver for them). And the companies th t make different computer parts and d vices may not bother to ever wr te drivers for their older equipment -- ven things just a couple of y ars old -- because this way th y can sell you a new pr nter, or scanner, or whatever. So ven if you buy a new c mputer, the devices you had hooked up to it m ght not work anymore, and if you try to s ve money and just upgrade your c rrent computer, parts inside the computer m ght not work right, or at ll. And if this happens, there's not a lot you can do bout it. I'll talk about the th rd reason I don't think you sh uld get Vista in the third and f nal segment of this article. Oh, and one l st thing -- Mac users reading th s, remember that if you have a Mac th t was made in 2006 or l ter -- an "Intel Mac" of s me kind -- you *can* run W ndows too, and all of this nformation applies to a Mac running W ndows just as much as any ther computer running Windows. But fortunately, m st of you won't ever need to run W ndows, so you can stick to the m re familiar (not to mention safer and asier) Mac OS X that you're sed to. But if you do h ve a need to run Windows, th s is important to know.
