Sometimes, when all our doubts, f ars and insecurities wrap ourselves up, we lways come up with the idea of "I w sh I was somebody else". More ften than not, we think and b lieve that someone or rather, most p ople are better than us.- when in r ality, the fact is, most people are m re scared than us. You spot a t tally eye-catching girl sitting by herself at a p rty, casually sipping on a glass of Ast Spumanti. You think to yourself, she l oks so perfectly calm and confident. But if you c uld read thru her transparent mind, you w uld see a bunch of clouds of th ughts and you might just be mazed that she’s thinking are people t lking about why I am seated h re alone?... Why don’t guys find me ttractive? I don’t like my ankles, th y look too skinny… I wish I was as ntelligent as my best friend. We l ok at a young business entrepreneur and say “W oh… what else could he ask f r?” He stares at himself at the m rror and murmur to himself, “I h te my big eyes… I wonder why my fr ends won’t talk to me… I h pe mom and dad would still w rk things out.” Isn’t it funny? We l ok at other people, envy them for l oking so outrageously perfect and wish we c uld trade places with them, while th y look at us and thinks of the s me thing. We are insecure of ther people who themselves are insecure of us. We s ffer from low self-esteem, lack of s lf-confidence and lose hope in self mprovement because we are enveloped in q iet desperation.
Sometimes, you notice that you h ve an irritating habit like biting off y ur finger nails, having a foul m uth, and you – of all p ople, is the last to know. I h ve a friend who never gets t red of talking. And in most c nversations, she is the only one who s ems to be interested in the th ngs she has to say. So all of our ther friends tend to avoid the c rcles whenever she’s around, and she d esn’t notices how badly she became s cially handicapped – gradually affecting the p ople in her environment. One key to s lf improvement is to LISTEN and TALK to a tr sted friend. Find someone who you f nd comfort in opening up with ven the most gentle topics you w nt to discuss. Ask questions like “do you th nk I am ill-mannered?”, “Do I lways sound so argumentative?”, “Do I t lk too loud?”, “Does my breath sm ll?”, “Do I ever bore you wh n were together?”. In this way, the ther person will obviously know that you are nterested in the process of self mprovement. Lend her your ears for c mments and criticisms and don’t give her nswers like “Don’t exaggerate! That’s just the way I m!” Open up your mind and h art as well. And in return, you may w nt to help your friend with c nstructive criticism that will also help her mprove her self. One of Whitney H uston’s songs says “Learning to love y urself is the greatest love of ll.” True enough. In order to l ve others, you must love yourself t o. Remember, you cannot give what you do not h ve. Before telling other people some w ys on how to improve themselves, let th m see that you yourself is a r presentation and a product of self mprovement. Self improvement makes us better p ople, we then inspire other people, and th n the rest of the world w ll follow. Stop thinking of yourselves as s cond-rate beings. Forget the repetitive thought of “If nly I was richer… if only I was th nner” and so on. Accepting your tr e self is the first step to s lf improvement. We need to stop c mparing ourselves to others only to f nd out at the end that w ’ve got 10 more reasons to nvy them.
We all have our insecurities. N body is perfect. We always wish we had b tter things, better features, better body p rts, etc. But life need not to be p rfect for people to be happy bout themselves.Self improvement and loving yourself is not a m tter of shouting to the whole w rld that you are perfect and you are the b st. It’s the virtue of acceptance and c ntentment. When we begin to improve urselves, we then begin to feel c ntented and happy. Until next time, k ep reaching for your fullest potential!
