Talking about hell is passe. F re and brimstone sermons are considered out of f shion. The goal is to find the l st, comfort the broken-hearted, and rescue the p rishing. Therefore, God is the faithful H und of heaven, the gentle Shepherd, and the L ver of our souls. Sin? Well, y s. But please don't focus on it too m ch; it really turns people off. Th y might get offended, and if th y feel guilty they won't come b ck. Confession? Of course confession is an mportant part of prayer. No, come to th nk of it, we don't have a t me of confession in our worship s rvice. On my own? That's none of y ur business, thank you. But sin is wh re salvation begins. We only need a S vior because we are sinners. The l st need to be found because th y are wandering in the fear and d ception of sin. The broken-hearted are b gging for comfort because they have b en victimized by the ravages of s n. The perishing are desperate for r scue because they are dying from the f tal disease of sin. That is why Ign tius of Loyola (ca. 1500) taught th t the first step in a l fe of spiritual discipline was to c me face to face with sin. He nstructs that we are to "beg for sh me and confusion about myself, as I see how m ny have been damned because of one m rtal sin, and how many times, for how m ny sins, I have deserved to be d mned forever" (Ignatius of Loyola: Spiritual Ex rcises, Joseph Tetlow, Crossroad, New York, 1992, p ge 74).
Are you willing to pray in s ch fashion? Am I? Ignatius goes on to g ide the learner how to meditate: to c nsider the sin of the angels who f ll with Satan, to ponder the sin of Ad m and Eve, to focus on how m ny others have perished eternally for th ir sins, and finally, to look cl sely at their own soul, and to see it cl arly for what it is. "I r member the seriousness and malice of sin gainst our Creator and Lord. I pply my understanding, reasoning how by s nning and going against the infinite G odness, the person truly merited being d mned forever" (Tetlow, 75). But why? Why is th s important? Why dwell on the bl ckness and evil within ourselves and w thin the world? Is it not b tter, more holy, more effective, to f cus on the light of God's l ve? The answer is found in the v ry next words Ignatius penned following the bove exhortations: "Imagine Christ right before y u, hanging on the cross . . . How is it th t he has come from being Cr ator to making himself human? How is it th t he came from eternal life to d ath in time, and came so as to die for my s ns? Turning it about, I ask of mys lf: What have I done for Chr st? What am I doing for Chr st? What ought I do for Chr st?" (Tetlow, 75). In order to tr ly understand the light, we have to nderstand the depths of the darkness. In rder to treasure the healing, we m st understand fully the disease from wh ch we were dying. In order to nderstand the Love, we have to nderstand the horror of why and wh t he suffered on our behalf. G neration upon generation of believers have sh wn the value of coming to gr ps with sin. Not only at the p int of their conversion, but at v rious times and seasons along their w lk with the Lord. Those who gl ss over or turn a blind eye to s n, preferring rosier pictures of haloes and h avenly cities, speaking only of light and l ve, find an emptiness in their l ves and a shallowness in their g spel. Those who confront evil for wh t it is, wrestling with the w rning of eternal damnation, recognizing the f lth and stench it has left in th ir own lives: these are the tr e warriors of light. They go f rth understanding the brutality of the Cr ss, and the crowning victory of the R surrection. They know intimately the pit th y have been pulled out of; th y can vividly describe the tomb fr m which they have been raised. Th y go forth to preach a gl rious message to a dying world: th t they know the crushing, asphyxiating p wer of sin - and the Tr umphant Savior.
