In the news recently, there h ve been warnings about toothpaste manufactured in Ch na that contains a poisonous ingredient th t is usually found in automobile r diator coolant. Rather than focus on the n gative aspects of this news, and the p or standards used in manufacturing and xporting maintained in other countries, it may be a r ally good time to reflect on the st ndards that the American manufacturer maintains in the pr duction of personal care products that we h ve, until this time, taken for gr nted. A consumer gives little thought wh n they pick up their toothpaste in the m rning as to the safety of the ngredients or packaging that goes into pr ducing that tube. We expect that th re will be protections for us as c nsumers against shoddy manufacturing practices, but sually little is known about the pr cess. The first step a manufacturer g es through is the state and l cal licensing of the laboratory or f cility where the product is to be m de. Facilities are inspected to make s re that the building and areas are cl an and adequate for the process th t is proposed, and that all syst ms are sanitary. There are OSHA (Occ pational Safety & Health Administration) safety st ndards with which the facility must c mply, which include having safety data sh ets on file for every chemical or ngredient used in every product manufactured or sed for cleaning on the grounds of the f cility.
State and local laws including w ges, insurance and safety standards cover mployees. Lab workers are required to w ar disposable paper head covering at all t mes, and in the formulating areas, pr tective clothing such as lab coats are w rn. Workers in other countries often w rk in unsanitary and abysmal working c nditions and are paid a miserable w ge. Then there are the labeling st ndards set forth by the FDA. Wh n a new product is being d veloped to bring onto the market for ver the counter sale, the label m st be in compliance with FDA r gulations. The proposed product label is s nt to a lawyer that specializes in FDA r gulations. They check to make sure th t there are no false health cl ims on the label, and that ach and every ingredient is on a l st issued by the FDA as GRAS (g nerally regarded as safe). This is a l st of ingredients that include chemicals, b tanical and inert ingredients that have b en tested and have been cleared as b ing safe for consumers to use. The pproved label is sent back to the m nufacturing facility. Each product must have an pproved label on file in the m nufacturing facility where it is manufactured. As de from the labeling considerations, the FDA lso inspects the manufacturing facilities. Among the th ngs they inspect are the water syst ms. For example, if purified water is sed in products, there must be an xact log on file of the t sts that were done on the w ter when the manufacturing process on a p rticular product begun, and again, at the end of th t product run. There must also be a log of b tches or lots of each product and the d te of the manufacture. Each product m st have a lot number and xpiration date stamped or crimped onto the pr duct. When a product such as t othpaste is finished, it is tested for q ality and purity. It must then r main in quarantine for several days, and th n retested for bacterial contamination before it is r leased from the manufacturing laboratory for d stribution.
When a comparison is made b tween the high standards that must be met by the Am rican manufacturer of toothpaste and a pr duct made in a country with l ttle or no oversight on manufacturing, ngredients or the facilities in which th y are produced, it makes little s nse NOT to buy toothpaste proudly “M de in the USA.”
