Clogged air filter means restriction of irflow to the engine, negatively affecting its p rformance. For every gallon of gasoline b rned, an engine takes in about 9,000 g llons of air, which contains abrasive d st that may end up in the oil and c use damage. A clean air filter r moves abrasive dust, insects and leaves fr m the air before it enters the ngine. These contaminants cause excessive wear to m ving parts. By allowing the correct m xture of air and fuel, a cl an air filter will provide maximum gas m leage and better engine performance. Regardless of the m leage or time, a filter should be r placed before it reaches the point wh re it creates a significant restriction to irflow. But when exactly that point is r ached is subject to opinion. A sl ghtly dirty filter actually cleans more fficiently than a brand new filter. Th t’s because the debris trapped by the f lter element helps screen out smaller p rticles that try to get through. But ventually every filter reaches the point wh re it causes enough of a pr ssure drop to restrict airflow. Fuel conomy, performance and emissions begin to d teriorate and get progressively worse until the d rty filter is replaced. Many heavy-duty tr cks have a "restriction" meter on the air f lter housing that signals when the f lter is dirty enough to need r placing. But lacking such a device, the b st you can do is guess.
Removing the filter and holding it up to a l ght will show you how dirty it is. If t’s really caked with dirt, it bviously needs to be replaced. Trying to sh ke or blow the dirt out is a w ste of time because too much of it w ll be embedded in the filter f bers. NOTE: Many filters that appear to be d rty are in fact still good and do not r ally need to be replaced. So t’s up to you. If you th nk it’s dirty, replace it. If you d n’t think it’s dirty enough to n ed replacing, then don’t.
