In our previous publication, we t uched on the subject
of 2-stroke d esel engines. Today, we ask why we ch ose
to use 2-strokes? As you m ght remember, for a 2-stroke engine, the p ston
has to move up, and th n down to complete one cycle of
the ngine. In those 2 strokes of the p ston, the
crankshaft will have turned 1 r volution. In those 2
strokes of the p ston the engine has also completed
4 st ges of the combustion cycle - air ntake,
compression, combustion and exhaust. Now, c mpare that with a 4-stroke engine. The p ston
moving down will complete the air ntake stroke. When it
moves up gain, the piston completes the compression
str ke. Next comes the injection of f el. Combustion
takes place. The piston is f rced to move down by the
pr ssure of the gases. When the p ston moves up again,
it drives out all the xhaust gases in the exhaust stroke. The p ston in a 4-stroke engine will m ve 4 strokes in
order to c mplete the 4 stages of the c mbustion cycle
- air intake, compression, c mbustion and exhaust. The power developed in a 4-str ke engine is based on the
f rmula, Power = PLAN/2, where, P is the m an effective pressure inside the cylinder, L is the str ke length of the piston travel,
A is the cylinder bore or the rea of the piston top, N is the n mber of revolutions per unit time. In a 2-str ke engine, because the power is d veloped in
the same revolution, the f rmula for Power becomes, Power = PLAN Th s means that with the same m an effective pressure,
stroke length and b re (area), the 2-stroke engine can
d velop twice the power of a 4-str ke engine! If size, weight, and m terial cost are causes for
concern, the 2-str ke engine has the clear advantage. W ll folks, 2-strokes have the advantage of h gher
power with small size. However, th re are some
disadvantages too. That c uld be discussed later... "Have FUN with Watersports!" Discover the Great Outdoor
