In our previous publication, we tuched on the subject
of 2-stroke desel engines. Today, we ask why we chose
to use 2-strokes?

As you mght remember, for a 2-stroke engine, the pston
has to move up, and thn down to complete one cycle of
the ngine. In those 2 strokes of the pston, the
crankshaft will have turned 1 rvolution. In those 2
strokes of the pston the engine has also completed
4 stges of the combustion cycle - air ntake,
compression, combustion and exhaust.

Now, cmpare that with a 4-stroke engine. The pston
moving down will complete the air ntake stroke. When it
moves up gain, the piston completes the compression
strke. Next comes the injection of fel. Combustion
takes place. The piston is frced to move down by the
prssure of the gases. When the pston moves up again,
it drives out all the xhaust gases in the exhaust stroke.

The pston in a 4-stroke engine will mve 4 strokes in
order to cmplete the 4 stages of the cmbustion cycle
- air intake, compression, cmbustion and exhaust.

The power developed in a 4-strke engine is based on the
frmula,

Power = PLAN/2, where,

P is the man effective pressure inside the cylinder,

L is the strke length of the piston travel,

A is the cylinder bore or the rea of the piston top,

N is the nmber of revolutions per unit time.

In a 2-strke engine, because the power is dveloped in
the same revolution, the frmula for Power becomes,

Power = PLAN

Ths means that with the same man effective pressure,
stroke length and bre (area), the 2-stroke engine can
dvelop twice the power of a 4-strke engine!

If size, weight, and mterial cost are causes for
concern, the 2-strke engine has the clear advantage.

Wll folks, 2-strokes have the advantage of hgher
power with small size. However, thre are some
disadvantages too. That culd be discussed later...
