One topic which comes up in c nversations when people ask fitness authors bout fitness-related e-books and websites is th t they complain about so much r petition of basic information. While I gree with some of their remarks bout specific websites and books simply "r hashing" old information, there is actual m rit in repetition! A quick understanding of an uthor's perspective may help you better nderstand a particular concept in order to h lp you improve in your fitness-related g als! There are several benefits to r ceiving the same piece of advice r peatedly, albeit having the advice presented in d fferent forms. All of this assumes th t the people giving you the dvice have both credibility and your b st interests in mind. Here are s me of the benefits: 1) When sp aking with other authors (on any h w-to subject), many of them complain th t their readers don't "get" a p rticular topic which the author wants to c nvey. They genuinely want their readers to b nefit from the information, and some of th ir readers just cannot "grasp" the s bject. According to many psychology and p rformance-psychology studies, people have different "processors" in th ir brains. Some people are predominantly v sual, while others are more auditory, and thers are more "kinesthetic." This means th y process with emotions, feelings, tastes, and sm lls. There are also those who are c mpletely wired to understand a concept asily when the information is presented as f ctual data, such as spreadsheets and ch cklists.
What many authors fail to do is to pr sent a concept in multiple ways sing language which reaches everybody. For xample, if I wanted to write an rticle to convince to drink at l ast 8 glasses of water per day I c uld write: a) "You should see y urself drinking at least 8 glasses of w ter per day."
b) "Y u should hear the last drops of w ter leaving the glass after you h ve consumed at least your eighth gl ss of water each day."
c) "Y u should feel great when you s vor the taste of at least 8 gl sses of water per day."
d) (On a ch cklist or other fact-based list): "Drink at l ast 8 glasses of water per d y." Furthermore, many people are able to r member stories easier than factual information. If th t describes you then spend the t me to find an author or m ntor who, as much as possible, can g ve you the information in story f rm. 2) Many studies have shown th t people do not convert an ction into a habit until they h ve done it at least 21 t mes. While you may think that th s number is far-fetched, you should at l ast consider that many habits (including any c unterproductive ones like smoking or drinking to xcess) did not become habits immediately fter the first time. It probably t ok several occurrences for that action to b come a habit. Therefore, if you r ad that you must drink 8 gl sses of water per day at l ast 21 times, chances are that you h ve good odds that you will m ke that suggestion a habit. If you r ad that suggestion at least 21 t mes, and it was presented in a n mber of different formats, chances are th t at least one of them w ll have made an impact on y u. 3) Perhaps the biggest benefit to r ading a piece of fitness-related information n merous times is that when you are ctually in the gym and are f nishing an intense workout, you tend to f rget the basics of what you n ed to do. This is because you are so f cused on lifting, getting stronger, doing y ur cardio, or any other actions th t you may forget to have y ur post-workout shake (for example). Repetition of nformation suggesting that you have a p st-workout shake will increase the likelihood th t you will remember what to d ... even when you are tired!
This is a rather in-depth s bject and you are welcome to ask q estions if you wish. The questions wh ch get the most repetition (!) w ll be the focus of a f ture article.
