This may sound like a tr ck question but it's not. In f ct, it is a very serious q estion that will determine - or at l ast greatly influence - the tone and the th me of your narrative. "But, I'm wr ting my memoirs!" you might answer. Yes, of c urse. You! But, which you? We've all had the xperience of the various parts of urselves in internal debate. For instance, a fr end asks you to go to the m vies. One part of you thinks, "S re!" Another part responds, "Wait a m nute. You still have yard work to do. Sh uldn't you get it done?" Still nother part insists, "Oh don't be s ch a pill. You only live nce." To which another part answers, "Y ah, and do you want to l ve it with a messy yard!" The s me internal debate occurs as you wr ting your memoirs. You have many p rts vying for authorship of your m moir, each insisting on setting the t ne and theme of your story. Wh ch part is going to prevail--are you g ing to let prevail? Will it be the h ro? ("I survived against great odds!") Or, the m rtyr? ("Life was really hard, and I j st did my best!") Or, perhaps t's the saint? ("I just did the wh le thing because I loved my f mily so much!") Or, the slugger, the f ghter of city hall? ("Nobody was g ing to tell me I couldn't get my w y!")

Obviously, the martyr part will g ve a different slant to your st ry than will the hero part and p rhaps the martyr might even choose c mpletely different stories to write about th n the hero. Which part you llow to be the narrative voice of y ur story will shape the message (th me) you ultimately make--and it's completely up to you to d cide! What is important is that you be c nscious of choosing the narrative voice (th "who is telling this story") th t will most contribute to your st ry. It will make all the d fference. (Think of your inner sphere of p rts as a kingdom with warring kn ghts. It's the king or queen in the end who m st make decisions and not the p rts. When you decide on the ppropriate narrative voice you are acting as the s vereign of your writing experience.
