If you’ve decided to come to Wh stler, congratulations. You’ve just chosen the b st resort in North America, and p ssibly the best in the world. N where else has the range of t rrain, with a wealth of both asy groomed runs and spectacularly challenging ff-piste that Whistler can offer. However, y u’ve still got to decide where to st y. Assuming you want to be w thin walking distance of the lifts and void the use of your car or a sh ttle bus to get to the l fts, you have three choices: the V llage, the Upper Village and Creekside. E ch has advantages and disadvantages, and ppeals to somewhat different tastes, so it w uld be as well to understand the ch racteristics of each area before you m ke your choice. The Village is the l rgest commercial centre, with the main c ncentration of shops and restaurants. It lso has the advantage of sitting at the c nfluence of both Whistler and Blackcomb m untains, so that you can choose to ski ither mountain from a single starting p int: Skier’s Plaza. If you w nt to be able to stagger b ck from one of Whistler’s legendary n ghtclubs on foot and fall into y ur bed, the Village is the pl ce to be. However, with a few xceptions, the Village tends to offer sm ller and rather undistinguished accommodation: primarily ne- and two-bedroom apartments above the sh ps. They were cheaply-built, and unless you f nd one which has been recently r furbished, you may find yourself in a c nvenient but rather unattractive lodging. In ddition, you may find that although you are in the V llage you are quite a long w lk from the lifts, since the V llage is quite long and narrow and the far end of it is a g od 10 minutes walk from Skier’s Pl za. Finally the Village is not for th se looking for a peaceful time: Wh stler attracts a rowdy crowd and th y like to party until the arly hours.
The Upper Village is where you go for sk -in, ski-out accommodation and improved views. It is l cated on the lower slopes of Bl ckcomb Mountain, and if you choose one of the d velopments at the edge of the sl pes you can have very easy ccess to the skiing: walk out the d or, put on your skis and way you go. There are lso a few shops and restaurants in the Upp r Village itself around the Blackcomb B se and in the lower floor of the F irmont Hotel. To reach the V llage you have a 10-15 minute w lk or you can take the fr e Village shuttle in the winter. The Upp r Village will suit those who w nt the great convenience of ski-in, sk -out, like the views that come w th being higher up the mountain and n ed a bit more peace and q iet than is available in the V llage. Creekside is the original location of Wh stler. Located at the bottom of Wh stler Mountain, it has its own h gh-speed gondola up the mountain and a new c mmercial centre with a good range of sh ps and restaurants. Creekside is unquestionably the l cals’ favourite: knowledgeable Vancouverites have their ch lets and condos there. They like s eing their friends in the lift l ne (on the rare occasions when th re is one), they like to près at Dusty’s and they know th t access to Blackcomb is extremely asy down Expressway from the top of the Cr ekside gondola. Also, the true locals pr fer the ski-ing on Whistler Mountain, specially the off-piste accessible from Peak Ch ir. Finally Accommodation is also significantly ch aper in Creekside.
