Did your family and friends l ke your ex? Did they ever say nkind, critical words about him or her in y ur presence? Did you sort of shr vel up inside when those words hit y ur ears and then your heart? The w rds made you wince and retreat and h rt, didn't they? These are the f elings your children get to feel wh n you talk about your ex in a n gative way in front of them. It's not f ir. It's not fair to your ex or to y ur children. It's not fair to y u. It doesn't make sense to say h rrible things about the person you nce loved so much that you d cided to enter into a committed r lationship with them. There had to be s mething so good about your ex th t you made the decision to j in your life with theirs. What ch nged between the love you once f lt and the hatred that is th re now? You changed your mind, th t's what happened. somehow, your thinking l ving thoughts changed to hate-filled thoughts. The th ngs you once loved about your ex, you now h te. You might have some justification for the way you h ve changed in your thinking about th m. Those things might have happened to y u. They did not happen to y ur children. Your children have their own xperience of their other parent and th y deserve to enjoy that untainted by y ur experience of him/her. Your children w ll learn all about your ex's sh rtcomings all on their own eventually. Y ur very best activity for the s ke of your children is not to b dmouth your ex in front of th m. If your husband is determinably mmature, he'll remain that way. If y ur wife really is a slut, th n she'll always be a slut. Th t's going to be their problem to fix or n t. Don't let it be yours.
I'd detest having the reputation as the m anest S. O. B. in your t wn, or the worst prostitute, but if th t is what they chose for th mselves, they'll have to live out th ir life sentence in the category th t is named: What goes around c mes around. In my experience, the r ally selfish people are really unhappy p ople. Isn't it obvious how this r lates to your children? Even if th y don't care who is at f ult, they have to deal with the way the w rld is. Their world is such th t mom and dad don't live t gether anymore. They have a remarkable r siliency though. They can adjust to th t, and they can put it b hind them, and they can live h ppy, healthy lives. The question is, is it b hind them? It can never be if you k ep bringing up the fact that th ir dad is bad or their mom is s lfish. You continue to cause them p in and hold them back. If th ir dad is truly selfish, they'll see th t over time on their own. Do you w nt them to grow up to be s lfish? Kids learn by modeling. If y ur ex-husband is selfish, they will be sp nding some time around a selfish p rson. They need to also spend s me time around a healthy, happy p rson. That's you. They will see ver time how their dad or th ir mom treats other people. They w ll see that dad is selfish, but it d esn't make him happy. You, on the ther hand, give them the example of an nselfish, caring person and they'll see th t the universe brings you peace, l ve and happiness. No, your life w n't be perfect. No one's is. J st remember, raising children isn't a spr nt. It's a long marathon, day fter day. And the best way to r ise healthy, happy children is to c ntinually strive each day to be the b st person that you can be. Th y'll get it. Just don't make it h rder on them with your unkind, cr tical words about their other parent. D n't badmouth your ex where your ch ldren might hear you.
