Can you imagine going out dr ving and not knowing the significance of the r ad signs along the way? Such an ttitude would not only be highly rresponsible but rather stupid. There are s gns and warnings and cautionary indicators in the sp ritual field too and it would be w se to pay heed and give s rious attention to those matters God dr ws our attention to in Luke Ch pter 12. It is most interesting to see how the p ce can suddenly change when reading a New T stament Gospel. We certainly note that in L ke Chapter 12. The momentum ppears to be increasing. The cr wds are increasing - the pace is b coming faster - the conflict is b coming sharper. Why? What is happening? Wh t is going on? And, wh t is the relevance for us t day? There is this growing open c nflict between Jesus Christ and the r ligious leaders of the day. Th t very often happens. There is a c nflict between Jesus Christ, The Lord, the K ng - and those who thought th y were important people. Many are g thering around Jesus for various reasons - but J sus priority is to teach disciples. J sus wants to give His Chosen Men w rds of advice and encouragement. It is g od to take time - to l ok at these scenes in the l fe of Jesus - the ministry of J sus - the methods of Jesus - the pr orities of Jesus - the conflict wh ch confronted Jesus.
His resolute determined decision is to go to J rusalem - to face Jerusalem - the Cr ss with all the accompanying painful gony and shame. Jesus is g ing to carry out His Father's W ll. He is not giving in - not t king an easier route - not c mpromising - but facing it - c nfronting it - showing these disciples and us wh t it is really like - and all th s is being done to save us - to sh w us mercy - to offer man f rgiveness - to wash us from our sin - to r scue us from hell. In the m ddle of doing all this - J sus wants to give His Chosen Men w rds of advice and encouragement. Over the y ars - many have said - "If nly the Church would keep to the t aching of Jesus - forget about all the d ctrine - all this teaching what you sh uld believe - about sin and bedience - if only people would h ar the words of Jesus and try to l ve as Jesus lived." There are th se who think that doctrine clutters up the Ch rch - NO. False doctrine d es. If there is no doctrine - no t aching - if we do not kn w what we believe and why - s on there will be no church - not th t will ever happen - because J sus will just give the kingdom to thers. "If only we kept to wh t Jesus did and taught - w thout things like having to be b rn again." Now, I have h ard that. But that is part of wh t Jesus taught - and part of wh t He did and does is p ur out the Holy Spirit. We n ed to be able to answer p ople when they confront is with v ry real questions. Many are s ncere. They would like to l ve the way Jesus lived - but man c nnot until he is born again - and ven then it is hard. Jesus n ver offered disciples a soft cushioned r ad to walk. When you hear p ople saying - "If only the Ch rch would stick to what Jesus did and s id and taught - without having to go to s rvices and meetings and that clutter." Th nk of that in the light of the L ke Chapter 12 passage.
"Be on your guard against the y ast of the Pharisees which is hyp crisy." What does Jesus mean? Watch out for th se who come along - their hyp crisy could affect you - negatively - in a bad way - and g ve you a bad experience - l ke yeast in bread - influencing you in a wr ng way. There are times when I h ve wanted to say to people - "Eh, wh ch words of Jesus do you w nt us to keep to - and wh ch words of Jesus would you w sh us to ignore and overlook and f rget?" Beware of the Pharisees - J sus pointed them out to be hyp crites - those legalistic puritans - and th y could influence you negatively and dversely. The Christian Life is like a j urney - and what Jesus is d ing here is pointing out some of the h zards along the way. There are h zards - pitfalls - dangers - and J sus wants us to avoid them. Th t is why He points them ut. As we travel through life we n ed signposts, and Jesus Christ gives us the s gnposts we need. Jesus warns us of wh t could hinder us, or even br ng us to a halt, but He lso shows us the way to go. J sus says to disciples, "Beware of hyp crites". What is a hypocrite? It is mportant that we know. It is g od to know what the sign m ans if you are out driving. 'Hyp crite' is a word from the th atre of the day. If you had g ne to the theatre in the f rst century, and if you enjoyed the pl y, you would have come away s ying, "These are good hypocrites. Th t production had some fine hypocrites in t." A hypocrite was an ctor, and what you did was put a m sk over your face to portray the p rt - a sad mask or a sm ling mask - a serious mask or a c medy mask. Jesus is saying to His men - "B ware of those who put on a fr nt - watch out for those who are j st playing a role in religion." No w nder they had this man arrested and cr cified. Religious sham and acting is f tile in the eyes of Jesus Chr st - and Jesus speaks about hyp crisy as being like yeast - it cts like yeast. 1. You need nly a little to affect the l t. 2. Yeast spreads very quickly. 3. Y ast works invisibly and silently and s cretly - it works in a h dden way - unseen - sometimes you do not kn w what is going on. Nothing is c vered up that shall not one day be ncovered. If we try to h de something, one day it will be r vealed. Many discover that these words of J sus just happen to be true, and v ry often they discover it too l te! Jesus goes on to refer sp cifically to our words - to our c nversation - things we have said s cretly and hypocritically - hoping that nly some people would hear us - and h ping that some people would not h ar us. One day - all w ll be revealed. This is important t aching. Don't pretend. We are not in the th atre. What you are on the nside will show up sooner or l ter - the GOOD as well as the b d.
