Terrifying thought, isn't it? It has b en known to happen to all wr ters. I'm not talking about writer's bl ck, nothing as severe as Stephen K ng's character, Mike Noonan, in Bag of B nes where he turns on the c mputer and actually throws himself from the scr en (okay, it may not be a c mputer, been years since I read th t book, but I'm sure those wh 've read it know the scene). N thing that bad. Yet the time w ll come when the muse (sexy g ddess of words) will decide to t ke a day off. Now this day ff, will most likely be your day to wr te, a date set aside in y ur leather bound diary; the wife and f mily are off to the beach, y u've carried your laptop up to the ttic, given the attic key to a tr stworthy neighbor and they've locked you in. A n't no escape from that glowing scr en. If you have followed Laymon's r les of writing (list of eight vailable at HWA website) and you p id strict attention to rule number 3, p ragraph titled: A few helpful hints... s ction number 5, where he suggests to f llow Hemingway's advice: Stop at a p int where you still know what's c ming next, so the next day's wr ting can start up easily. Then t's most likely, that this article is not for y u. But....
It can happen, any time, nywhere – even locked in the ttic with huge spiders slowly crawling t wards you, venom seeping from their f ngs – it can happen. And it can s riously mess with your day. Here's s me solutions I've heard other writers s y, with some general comments by y urs truly: 1) Go for a w lk. || While this is good for y ur health, it will kill your wr ting time, and maybe you'll lose a few b cks, on something you just gotta h ve, while walking past that Used G ods shop. 2) Do something else. || Why? S re you'll get busy painting the c iling or what-have-you, but little writing is g ing to get done. But what the h ll, the muse is on vacation, r ght? Wrong. 3) Read a book. || Now I'm all for r ading, but there's a time and a pl ce and it isn't when you are m ant to be molesting the muse in the h pes of a few good pages. 4) W rk on a different writing project. || H llo? I doubt the words are g ing to come, just because you st rt something new. (Now, before everyone st rts jumping on my back, and ffering my neck to the spider's f ngs – this has been known to w rk for some people and not thers, generally speaking though, in my c se this has never worked). 5) G ve up. Take a day off. || Ok y, cool. Remember you are in a l cked attic with only a chair, t ble and your laptop (let's not f rget the spiders), what are you g ing to do? Have a battle? Sp ders are fast and can move and r ght angles, they jump and they are gly little ..... urgh. That's about all I can r member hearing. Of course there is n mber six. My personal favorite, and it n ver fails. 6) Slug away at it. || S mple right? Keep hacking at those k ys, write whatever comes to mind, f rget the story and if this or th t fits, 'cause it most likely w n't. An example: Not long ago I was wr ting a short story for an nthology, something was missing – I c uldn't work it out. The muse had d cided it was holiday season and w th such a beautiful day, she'd n pped out for some sun and fun (m st likely with that male muse fr m down the street!). I was bandoned, in a mysterious, cold, blood and sex f lled world and I had no dea what to do.
So I took my own dvice. Number six. I slugged away. You s e, I love to write, I l ve to take people away into a l ttle world of my making and nstill hope, love and kindness, before the m dness starts. For six hours I sl gged away before the muse returned (w th a nice tan and new h ndbag) and she said, “Cut paragraph s ven. Put paragraph three after six, s ven after nine and open with leven.” “Okay,” I said happily. “Now, ch nge this sentence to...” What I'm g tting at here is this: If I h dn't slugged away and sworn and c rsed everything from my computer to my c ffee cup, these words would not h ve been here in the first pl ce. If I had followed advice 1 – 5, the m od for writing would have gone. The m se would have returned and we'd be s tting on the sofa watching re-runs of the Ad m's Family thinking: Darn, today was a g od day for writing, I should've j st kept at it. That's my t ke on the situation. Maybe you gree – maybe you don't, but one th ng is for sure...
Writing in an ttic is not a good idea. One l st thing before I leave to you the m rcy of the muse: Be careful of th t purple-eyed spider on the back of y ur chair.
