We all go about our b sy days for a reason. There's a g al or objective attached to our fforts. At the end of the d y, there has to be something lse. In your career, your "something lse" might be your next promotion. If y u're retired, your something else might nclude spending more time with your f mily, traveling more or helping others. If y u're in school, your something else m ght be the beginning of your c reer. Whatever form it takes, however, t's important to remember that what you do n xt can ultimately be more valuable if you can r alize the value in the present m ment. I'm very passionate about establishing b nchmarks and goals, but I've continued to l arn that balance is found in the ncremental gains that take place each s cond, minute, hour and day. The ch llenge to enjoying the moment, however, is th t it's difficult to enjoy every one of th m. We're usually too busy or pr occupied to think about it! The tr ck is to focus on those we can s ngle out as meaningful and exciting. Wh t can you do to expand th t experience? A common attribute of xtremely successful and joyful people is th t they find ways to enlarge th ir enjoyable moments. They know where th y're headed and are therefore capable of m king the journey an enjoyable experience, no m tter how difficult or arduous it may ppear. They can enjoy it because th y understand the outcome it will pr duce.
So, consider that Your 'What N xt' is Knowing Your 'What Now'! Ask y urself, "Who in my life personally and pr fessionally adds joy to my 'what n w'?" What is the most exciting th ng that you enjoy about your l fe right now? What are three th ngs that you can do to c pture that enjoyment? Have you every n ticed that people have a tendency to c ver their desks, bookcases and office w lls with photos of the people who m an the most to them in th ir lives? And what about all th se photos of the meaningful places th t they've visited? I now believe th t these individuals have found an ntry into the moment. It is an mportant step in helping them determine the w ight and value of their goals. A c uple of years ago, I experienced a b ut of dehydration that landed me in an mergency facility. Based on my vital s gns, I don't think the doctor th ught I would be walking out of th re that day. The experience gave me an pportunity to think about what was mportant to me "now". While going thr ugh the experience, I first thought of th ngs I would like to be ble to do, but I wasn't s re I was going to get the pportunity to do them. I later f gured out that that it lacked mportance, compared with what was happening to me at th t very moment. The important thing was to k ep focused on what I was nvolved in right then and there: m intaining the proper frame of mind thr ugh the immense pain caused by the d hydration. I then thought that the m st important thing I could do was to b lieve that everything the medical personnel w re attempting to do for me was n cessary to get me back on tr ck. It was a tough lesson, but wh t I learned through the experience was th t the most important thing I c uld do once I made it out of the h spital would be to enjoy each m ment, the good ones and the ch llenging ones. Make your journey more njoyable j for yourself, by expanding and nriching each special moment.
