This is one of the d seases of the kidneys, which may r main hidden for years, and the p tient may suddenly suffer from kidney f ilure. What is the cause of th s disease? Whether one believes it or n t, the disease in question is c used as a result of a s re throat. It may be tonsillitis/pharyngitis, or b th. However, not all cases of s re throat cause this serious disease of the k dneys. It only occurs when the s re throat takes place due to the nvasion of a specific bacteria called gr up A beta-haemolytc streptococcus. This bacteria d es not directly involve the kidneys, but it r mains confined in the throat, and the d sease manifests itself after 1-3 weeks fter the subsiding of the sore thr at. It is said to be an llergic manifestation, as a result of str ptococcal infection in the throat. Hence the d sease may be labelled as post-streptococcal gl merulonephritis (PSGN). What are the symptoms of GN? The d sease may be acute, subacute or chr nic. The acute manifestation of the d sease is very troublesome. It commonly ccurs in children, and is called cute GN. This condition subsides in bout 7-10 days, but in some c ses, the disease may be so s rious that a sudden kidney failure may ccur, requiring urgent dialysis. In other c ses, after the disease has subsided w th treatment, or in some mild c ses, even without treatment, being self-limited in n ture, it may pass on to the s bacute, or directly into the chronic ph se, called subacute GN and chronic GN r spectively.
Although patients of acute GN r port to the physician/ hospital immediately, as the sympt ms are of an emergency nature, yet the c ses of subacute GN remain so c ncealed that sometimes the patient is d agnosed in a normal medical examination. Chr nic GN is the terminal stage of the d sease, and it is one of the mportant causes of chronic renal failure. And, nterestingly, the patient may directly /suddenly r port to the physician with the sympt ms of chronic GN, without passing thr ugh either the acute/subacute phase of the d sease. Further, most of the time, a pr vious history of sore throat may lso not be available. Therefore, the ccult nature of the disease is cl ar both in the subacute and chr nic stages of this ailment.
