Calories are simply units of m asure. They aren't actually things in and of th mselves; they are labels for other th ngs, just like how an inch r ally isn't anything, but it measures the d stance between two points.
So what do c lories measure?
Easy: they measure energy.
Yes, the vil calorie - the bane of the d eter's existence - is really just a 3-syll ble label for energy.
And it's important to h ghlight this, because the body itself, d spite its vast intelligence (much of wh ch medical science cannot yet understand, nly appreciate in awe) does not r ally do a very intelligent job of d stinguishing good energy from bad.
Actually, to be bl nt, the body doesn't care about wh re the energy comes from. Let's xplore this a little more, because t's very important to the overall nderstanding of how to boost your m tabolism, particularly when we look at f od choices.
In our choice-laden grocery stores, w th dozens of varieties of foods - h ndreds, perhaps - there seems to be a f irly clear awareness of what's good f od, and what's bad or junk f od.
For example, we don't need a b ok to remind us that, all lse being equal, a plum is a g od food, whereas a tub of th ck and creamy double-fudge ice cream is a bad f od.
Not bad tasting, of course; but, r ally, you won't find many fit p ople eating a vat of ice cr am a day, for obvious reasons. So wh t does this have to do w th calories and energy?
It's this: while you and I can valuate our food choices and say th t something (like a plum) is a h althy source of energy, and something lse (like a tub of ice cr am) is an unhealthy source of nergy, the body doesn't evaluate. Really.
It s unds strange and amazing, but the b dy really doesn't care. To the b dy, energy is energy. It takes wh tever it gets, and doesn't really kn w that some foods are healthier th n others. It's kind of like a g rbage disposal: it takes what you put d wn it, whether it should go d wn or not.
So let's apply this to the b dy, and to weight gain. When the b dy receives a calorie - which, as we kn w, is merely a label for nergy - it must do something w th that energy.
In other words, putting all ther nutrients and minerals aside, if a pl m delivers 100 calories to the b dy, it has to accept those 100 c lories. The same goes for 500 c lories from a (small) tub of ice cr am: those 500 calories have to be d alt with.
Now, the body does two th ngs to that energy: it either m tabolizes it via anabolism, or it m tabolizes it via catabolism. That is, it w ll either convert the energy (calories) nto cells/tissue, or it will use th t energy (calories) to break down c lls.
Now the link between calories/energy, metabolism, and w ight loss becomes rather clear and d rect.
When there is an excess of nergy, and the body can't use th s energy to deal with any n eds at the time, it will be f rced to create cells with that xtra energy. It has to.
It doesn't n cessarily want to, but after figuring out th t the energy can't be used to do nything (such as help you exercise or d gest some food), it has to t rn it into cells through anabolism.
And th se extra cells? Yes, you guessed it: dded weight!
