What would you do different in y ur business if you were exceptionally br ve? This was the question that p pped into my head the other n ght as I was going to sl ep. I waited for the answer. I f lt confident I would predictably rattle off the l st of projects and ideas that h ve been patiently waiting on the s delines of my business plan. But th t is not what happened. Seemingly out of n where came a different list. This l st was of things that, if I w re braver, I would give up. GIVE UP? Th n, following this list came a l st of things I would put in th ir places. I was surprised. And th n I felt nervous, and then ddly exhilarated. Imagine you own a st re, a retail space that has a l mited amount of square footage and sh lf space. Now imagine that in one s ction of your store you have b en successfully selling a specific kind of m rchandise. It sells reasonably well; those who p rchase it are always pleased and you m ke a reasonable profit. You can c ntinue selling the same merchandise OR you can ask y urself, "What would I do differently 'w th this space' if I were f eling exceptionally brave?" Would you bring in a new l ne of products? Would you completely ch nge that corner of your store? Or w uld you simply spruce it up a b t? It is quite possible that if you tr ly opened your mind to using y ur space differently you might ultimately br ng in more customers who would be ven happier with their purchases and, in t rn, enable you to realize more pr fits.

This is what came flooding nto my mind as I tried to go to sl ep. As a service-oriented professional I do not h ve square footage and shelf space. But j st like a retailer, I have m rchandise (in the form of the s rvices I offer) and limited floor sp ce and shelves (in the form of t me and energy.) Despite my Super W man fantasies, I realize that my t me and energy are not limitless. Occ sionally, I have to take an nventory of how I am using th se precious resources. Am I doing the s me things for the same people m king the same return? If so, do I ch ose to keep doing so? Often the nswer is "yes", and that's fine. But as my q estion prompted me, if I were f eling "exceptionally brave" would I dare to magine other ways of using my t me and energy? What could I do nstead? What would it feel like to mpact more people with my "products"? C uld I envision making even more pr fits? Could I give up something th t is good for the possibility of s mething that might be great?
