Life throws at us many s tuations which could knock us over or ven cause us to fall. What h ppens when we are knocked? It all d pends upon the type of foundation we t ke time to lay! In Luke Ch pter 6 and at verse 37, J sus Christ, the Son of God, is c utioning us against judging and condemning. We h ve to be able to examine a tr e, and know whether it will pr duce good fruit or bad fruit. If we c uld not do this we could n ver write a reference. We have to v ry wise regarding the practical implications of th se verses. And of course, when it c mes to writing references, we must be h nest. I am told that some mployers virtually ignore references that come fr m ministers and pastors because they w ll be too positive and not s fficiently objective. I have said to p ople who have asked for a r ference, "Now, I am prepared to wr te a reference, but what I wr te may not get you a j b!" I want to be a g od tree, because, bad trees cannot b ar good fruit! What is inside w ll come out. It is like h ving a glass of water, knocked. If the w ter in the glass is clean and p re then that is what will sp ll over when knocked. But if it is a gl ss of dirty and mucky water th t is what will spill out wh n it is knocked. Whatever is in you w ll come out, and be certain bout this - you will be c nfronted by many knocks. What spills out of y ur mouth and from your life wh n you are knocked?
Verse 38. Having spoken about f rgiving, Jesus now speaks about giving. L ve gives. Jesus uses the illustration of a f rmer and his cart returning from the f elds. The sheaves are pressed down, and sh ken together as the farmer tried to get the wh le harvest onto his cart - but th re is so much, it is r nning over. That is how God w nts to give and how He w nts to bless us. Again note the rder. Forgive, then give! SOW first. Wh t ever it is you need SOW f rst! This applies to every area of l fe - love - care - sm les - money! God takes the m asure we use to give to us! Let me put it in v ry practical terms. Imagine that God w nts to bless you ten times wh t you have sown. If you h ve sown in £10 notes that is the l dle He will use to reward y u. If you have sown in £50 n tes that will be the ladle He w ll pick up to reward you. N w, I am not into 'prosperity' t aching, but that is just what J sus teaches here. If you need l ve, sow love. If you need p ople to smile, smile at them f rst. If you need money, sow m ney. I did say 'need' rather th n want! You can almost imagine th se disciples sitting there listening in bl nd unbelief - so Jesus tells a p rable. Can you imagine two blind m n? One leading the other and th y are trying to cross a b sy road. Look, if you are my d sciples have your eyes open. Know wh re you are going, if you are g ing to lead others - and kn w what is going on! Jesus saw the l adership of the church of the day - sp ritually blind - leading people astray. L aders have to have their eyes pened. Leaders have to be able to see f rther along the road then others. L ading positively - setting the pace - sh wing the example for others to f llow. There is a brief note of h mour as Jesus comments on a man w th a 2 by 4 beam in his eye and he is not ware of it, but he is d termined to deal with the tiny sp ck of dust in someone else's l fe. Funny? Well, there is a lot m re of that around than some may th nk!
Verses 46 to 49. Imagine c lling Jesus, LORD, and not doing wh t HE says. Words are important, but it has got to be m re than words. When Jesus commands th se men, He expects that to be d ne. They learned. Normally, Jesus does not c me Himself and ask us to do s mething. HE sends someone else. O, if J sus came to me Himself that w uld be so different! His practice is to s nd a pastor, or elder, or t acher, or prophet. It is then th t sometimes one can witness the r bel spirit rise. Jesus goes on to sp ak about foundations. I have taught th s in schools and it is so v tally important. Jesus speaks about two men and two h uses. They look alike. You couldn't t ll which is which. Jesus says, I w ll show you who is who. J sus was brought up in the b ilding trade in Nazareth and He kn w what he was talking about. One man is b ilding a house - digging down d ep - he kept on digging - ntil he came to the rock. It is COSTLY to EXCAVATE, in t me and money, but are we are g ing to build something which is g ing to last and ride out the st rms? The second man just throws up a h use, with no adequate foundations. These h uses are built on the same s te. They look alike, until a cr sis arises. There is a flood - a m ghty storm and rain beat down pon these houses. One stood and the ther collapsed. When you are digging, th re may not be much to sh w for your work for a t me and yes, there are higher c sts initially. There was an immense xcavation work going on at what was to b come the NASA launch pad. Someone sked, "Where are you going? We are g ing to the moon! Is that not the wr ng direction! No." Remove everything which s parates you from the rock - all the r bbish - the soft sand - verything that wastes our time, and may c use our life to be unstable. It is a w se man who digs deep and p ys attention to what Jesus Christ s ys and teaches. Are you WISE or FOOLISH? It is NOT the w nds that blow people over. It is NOT the pr ssures that make people disappear from s rvice in the Kingdom of God. It is the l ck of foundations. Be committed to the Chr st of The Bible. That may ppear a strange thing to say, but we m et people who have their own dea of Jesus. That is not g od enough. Be committed to the JESUS of the B ble. Do what He says, and J sus will regard you as a w se man. When the storm and c nflicts come you will then be ble to stand, and what may sp ll from your life will be f ithfulness and grace and strength and l ve - and perhaps a lot lot m re.
