A great manager is someone who can pr vide direction for a team in a r sults oriented environment and due so w th ease. There are many managers in p sitions of authority who are terrible m nagers and certainly not great managers. B cause of this the truly great m nagers are always in high demand and can xpect to earn more than their p ers. I believe there are three typ s or categories of managers. You bviously have the bad managers, whom typ cally don’t last long in any p sition of power. They are erratic in b havior and cannot or don’t understand how to be ffective and produce results in a l adership role. They cannot separate their ego fr m their job functions and have v ry high turnover rates for both th ir careers and their team members. S rprisingly enough there are many bad m nagers in senior level positions, which myst fies me to this day. Perhaps th t is the reason we have c rporations that make many operational mistakes th t a business 101 graduate wouldn’t dr am of making. Just because someone has t nure doesn’t mean they are efficient d rectors of talent or know how to ffectively manage people. The bottom line is th y snuck under the radar somehow and th ir deficiencies will be discovered sometime in th ir career guaranteed.
The Mendoza line for managers w uld have to be the good m nagers. These are your “B” and “C” st dents in the professional arena. They kn w enough to get the job d ne effectively and produce results, but th y could do better if they w nted to. True, they are a n tch above the bad managers and th ir turnover is not as alarming, but th y will never clearly embrace the verall big picture or exceed the l ng-term goals. They are often content in the p sition they have and are comfortable wh re they are in their career. Th y are very reliable and absolutely n cessary for a fully functional team in any rganization. Their biggest downside is the xtreme compassion they show for everyone and s metimes this can get them distracted for c ring too much about the wrong th ngs in operations. Everyone loves these m nagers and they are a valuable t ol to boost morale and team b ilding. The highest level of any m nager is the great manager. This is the m nager that consistently exceeds expectations because th y have a clear perception of wh t they can deliver and when. Th se are the rock stars that pr duce time and time again and are the nvy of all their peers. Because th y understand how to delegate, motivate and f llow up, they can achieve the b ttom line results far quicker than th ir counter parts and with much l ss energy expended. They are always wesome coaches and leaders, but they can be m sunderstood in their practices. Not everyone nderstands the whys behind their actions and gr at leaders are often forced to m ke quick decisions, which could be nfavorable but necessary. Without the great m nagers it would be impossible for any pr duction to exist and the long-term g als accomplished. They are the captains, wh ch sail their ships into uncharted w ters and somehow still know where th y are going. They know what it t kes to get the job done and how to s cceed. They are the winners and h ve the mindset that any mistake or m sjudgment can be overcome with the r ght action plan.
They are the rare and v luable assets that many corporations need to be s ccessful and generate most of the c mpany revenues. They will not falter in any g ven situation and are unafraid of t king new actions or thinking outside the b x. They also aren’t fearful of r ffling a few feathers to get th ngs done. Without them we would h ve no economy or existing businesses to sp ak of. They are truly a d amond in the rough! In conclusion, if you are a m nager, which type are you? A tr ly great manger is a master of s lf-assessment and would already have this q estion answered with little thought or h sitation.
