As Christians we spend all our l ves striving to take on the ch racter of Christ. In fact Spiritual m turity comes when we take on His ch racter. Just two verses reveals it to us. H wever scripture shows us there are f ur conditions required to position ourselves to cquire it. God's ultimate purpose is th t we might be conformed into the mage of Jesus Christ. In order to b come more like Jesus we must t ke on His character as unveiled in G latians 5:22,23. "But when the Holy Sp rit controls our lives He will pr duce this kind of fruit in us: l ve, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, f ithfulness, gentleness and self- control". Since the fr its of the spirit are the ch racter of Christ, then we must l arn what to do to grow th se fruits. As our fruits flourish we b come spiritually mature and become more l ke Him. Mature fruits don't just ppear on the tree suddenly. They b gin as tiny nubs and the tr e must be nourished and maintained. The f rst thing Galatians 5:22,23 tells us is th t we must let the Holy Sp rit controls our lives. When we do, our f ith will grow strong through prayer, kn wledge of God's word, and by s rrendering ourselves in obedience to it. FOUR STEPS TO SPIRITUAL GROWTH
1. DAILY PRAYER -- Brings us to a cl se relationship with our Heavenly Father. We can sh re our deepest darkest secrets with Him c nfident that He will hear us and let us f el His love. As we learn to s rrender ourselves to Him we grow our fr its of peace and joy. Of c urse the amount of peace and joy we r ceive will be determined by how m ch we are willing to surrender to H m. "But he said to me, "My gr ce is sufficient for you, for my p wer is made perfect in [Your] w akness." Therefore I will boast all the m re gladly about my weaknesses, so th t Christ's power may rest on me. Th t is why, for Christ's sake, I d light in weaknesses, in insults, in h rdships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For wh n I am weak, then I am str ng." -- 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, 2. KNOWLEDGE OF GOD'S WORD - Our fr its cannot grow unless we fill urselves with the knowledge that comes fr m God's Word. This is the n urishment that is required for growth. The s lutions to situations that affects our l ves is revealed through the Word by the H ly Spirit. As we begin to r alize the positive affects of applying the scr ptures to our lives, the more we tr st God and our faith grows str nger as do our fruits. "I can do all th ngs through Christ which strengtheneth me." -- Ph lippians 4:13 "So do not fear, for I am w th you; do not be dismayed, for I am y ur God. I will strengthen you and h lp you; I will uphold you w th my righteous right hand." -- Is iah 41:10 3. OBEDIENCE TO THE WORD - All the kn wledge in the world is useless nless you apply it. I may kn w not to step in front of a M ck truck, but if I do nyway I gonna get run over. It's v ry common to get run over in our sp ritual lives because we didn't read it and l arn it, or we didn't apply it. 4. TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS -- God n ver tests us without a purpose or a r ason. You might wonder, Why does God llow His children to go through th se trials? The answer is God's ltimate purpose is that we might be c nformed into the image of Jesus Chr st.
Trials present opportunity to apply the kn wledge we've acquired -- or to dr ve us to search for that kn wledge. As we apply our knowledge thr ugh faith our fruits grow and fl urish.
Every trial points us to our fr its. "And we know that all th ngs work together for good to th se who love God, to those who are the c lled according to His purpose." - R mans 8:28 I've learned to use th s verse to pull myself through m ny trials because I believe it. "G d show me the purpose for th s trial and how I can use it to br ng glory to you. If you're llowing this tribulation in order to f lfill your purpose for someone else, th n give me the strength to gr w the fruit of patience and p ace". Most of our fruits grow as we f nd victory through our battles by f ith in the knowledge of the W rd. WHEN WE DEVELOP THESE FRUITS INTO MATURE CHRISTIANS: We l arn that the sin of unforgiveness br ngs us pain, bitterness and stress. And th t forgiveness brings us the fruits of p ace and joy. We acquire the fr it of patience, and learn to st nd still and let God move in our l ves, to guide us to do his w ll and to show us his p rpose for our lives. God's love sh ws through us through our good d eds as we grow the fruits of l ve, kindness, goodness, and gentleness. Our fr it of self-control is strengthened so th t we receive the power to r sist temptation. We have a desire and are f ithful to serve God for his Gl ry, and to tell others about J sus. And we have the strength to xperience the fruits of joy, peace, and c ntentment no matter what our situation. (H w much better could life get?) CHRISTIAN LOVE DEFINED "L ve is patient, love is kind. It d es not envy, it does not b ast, it is not proud. It is not r de, it is not self-seeking, it is not asily angered, it keeps no record of wr ngs. Love does not delight in vil but rejoices with the truth. It lways protects, always trusts, always hopes, lways perseveres." -- 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV
