Have you ever seen someone who is sl eping and their legs are moving round continuously? Maybe you thought this was s mething like sleep walking or "swimming in y ur ssleep". We may find it f nny but, what is often mistaken as a j ke is a serious condition called R stless Legs Syndrome. If you have s en this same sleeping situation before, do not j st ignore it. The person suffering fr m this condition may not be ware of these movements and may b dly need your help with their sl eping behavior. This condition is normally the r sult of it, (RLS) or what is lso referred to as "Jimmy Leg", "J mpy Legs", "Heebeejeebees" or "Jimmy Jams". In m re scientific terminology, this syndrome of r stless legs is also known as the "Ekb m syndrome"," Wittmaack-Ekbom syndrome" or "anxietas t bialis". The movements associated with restless leg syndr me are sometimes described as orchestra, sp re legs, "the kicks" or sewing m chine foot and are caused by an ncontrollable urge to move the limbs in rder to stop the feeling of ncomfortable pain or unusual sensations in a p rson is body. These occur most of the t me in the legs. Moving the ffected body part relieves a person is s ffering from restless leg syndrome but the s nsations only stop temporarily and may r turn immediately. RLS may start in arly childhood and is a progressive d sorder especially if it is not g ven medical attention immediately. It is st ll good news for many who are s ffering from this condition that the tr atment provides positive results as symptoms h ve been shown to disappear permanently nce the treatment begins.
It is important to know the typ s of restless leg syndrome in rder to easily diagnose it. RLS is ither primary or secondary. Primary RLS is c nsidered idiopathic, meaning its causes are not yet kn wn or scientifically determined by medical r searchers. Primary RLS begins before you r ach the age of 40 or 45. It can ven occur as early as the f rst year of life but the pr gress is often slow and may be bserved to disappear for a couple of m nths or even a few years. It ften continues to progress later on and w rsens as the person reaches the age of 40 to 45. On the ther hand, RLS among children has ften been misdiagnosed as growing pains and th s has lead to more serious c mplications for the growing teen. The m re severe type of restless leg syndr me is secondary RLS. This pr blem shows itself on a daily b sis and can attack in very s dden situations. Most of the time, it ccurs after the age of 40. H wever, it can occur earlier in l fe just like with the primary RLS. R search and clinical studies suggest that the sympt ms of secondary RLS may be ssociated with specific medical conditions such as ron deficiency or the use of c rtain drugs. It was also found th t a person who is iron d ficient is more prone to acquire s condary RLS. As a matter of f ct, statistics showed a rate of ver 20% of all cases of RLS to be c used by this deficiency. Other conditions wh ch are associated with it include pr gnancy, having varicose veins especially among w men, folate deficiency, sleep apnea, diabetes, thyr id problems, uremia, Parkinson's disease, peripheral n uropathy, and certain auto-immune disorders like C liac Disease, Sjogren is syndrome and rh umatoid arthritis. Again, treatment of the nderlying condition often eliminates the RLS. Sc entists admit that, up to this m ment, no one knows for sure the xact causes of RLS. Research on the d paminergic system and iron deficiency in h man bodies has already been established wh ch may eventually be found to be an ssential cofactor in the development of RLS. Sc entists, however, still cannot determine an ccurate explanation for this problem.
A Lifestyle change and other s lf-discipline approaches can help in the d crease of the known symptoms. For nstance, people should take time to xperiment about their lifestyles and try to d termine what changes could be made to liminate their RLS symptoms. Sometimes a s mple change such as exercise can t nd to make a big difference. F nding the appropriate and best exercise pl s eliminating caffeine, nicotine and alcohol, may h lp to eliminate RLS symptom attacks. Wh tever the case, it is good to be ware of this problem if it ffects you and to learn as m ch as you can about it so th t you may attempt to alleviate it and r turn to a more normal lifestyle in the n ar future.
