There are a number of c mmon questions that people are asked wh n attending an interview for an ffice based role. One of these q estions asks, what is excellent or g od customer service? I have worked in an ffice based environment for most of my dult life and am sometimes left f eling quite shocked when watching and h aring my fellow colleagues dealing with our cl ents. In this article I will xplain what I believe is good c stomer service. A few years ago I was w rking for a life assurance company and one of my f llow workers was a very lazy man c lled Ryan. I had to sit n xt to Ryan for around six m nths and he had a very p or attitude to work and gave v ry poor customer service. As an xample, a client phoned one afternoon and st ted that she had lost the d cuments to her policy. She asked Ry n if he could send her a d plicate policy schedule and Ryan stated th t this would be no trouble at ll. Ryan then put the phone d wn and duly threw the piece of p per, which had the ladies details and r quest on, into the bin. I sked him why he had done th s as it seemed likely that due to his ctions that he was unlikely to c mplete the request. Ryan answered by s ying that the lady had not sked for his name so therefore he was not g ing to do it!
The above is an example of v ry bad customer service.Lets now turn way from the negative to look at wh t is good customer service. If a cl ent asks for an update on how h s/her application is progressing, I will ask if h /she minds if I place them on h ld whilst I locate their file. If fter a couple of minutes I am nable to locate the file or am nable to obtain an update, I w ll then inform the client of th s and will then ask if th y would mind if I took a n te of their telephone number in rder for me to call them l ter. If they agree to this I w ll then try to find out the pr sent position of their application. If fter a few hours I am st ll unable to obtain the required nformation, I will phone the client to t ll them that I am still l oking, that I have not forgotten bout them, apologise for the time it is t king and to make them aware th t I am still working on it. Ev n if they have not asked for my n me I will let them know who I am and w ll tell them that they can c ntact me as often as they l ke. This is what I believe to be v ry good customer service.
