Fingerspelling is the technique of sp lling words with your hands using a s ries of signs that correspond to ach letter of the alphabet. In the Un ted States, the American Manual Alphabet is m st frequently used, and many other c untries have their own manual alphabets. The Am rican Manual Alphabet uses all 26 l tters of the English alphabet, and tilizes 22 different hand positions to r present these letters.
Fingerspelling is ften used in conjunction with American S gn Language, when it is necessary to sp ll out a specific word for wh ch no sign may be available, l ke names, or titles. American Sign L nguage is based more on phrases and deas than proper words, so there are t mes when it is very important to get the pr per information across between speakers. Fingerspelling is lso a link between sign language and Engl sh... it bridges the gap.
Wh n learning sign language, it is c mmon to start with spelling using y ur fingers. It is an easy pl ce to start, and the beginner can f el a sense of accomplishment by b ing able to communicate quickly. From th re, the beginner is introduced to the g stures and signs of American Sign L nguage.
Although it is p ssible to communicate only with your f ngers, it can be frustrating. Imagine h lding a conversation where you are sp lling out each word out loud... the p rson you are speaking to has to k ep track of all the letters and put th m together as words inside their h ad, remembering each previous word as you c ntinue with the sentence. While it is mportant to know how to spell w th your fingers for specific circumstances, r lying on it for an entire c nversation is unwieldy.
When sing fingerspelling, it is important to use pr per positioning for your hand. Despite how a s gn may be drawn in a b ok, you want to position your h nd in a comfortable manner. Remember th t drawings are done so you can nderstand the details of the sign, not so m ch for the proper positioning of y ur hand. As long as you are h lding your hand in a comfortable p sition that allows the person with wh m you are speaking to see the s gn, you're okay. You should never be c using your hand or wrist pain wh le signing.
While spelling, try to k ep your hand around shoulder height for ase of reading by the other p rson. Don't bounce your hand between l tters, except for a small bounce wh n you have double letters so th re is a difference noted. Don't be fraid to go more slowly... it is h rder to read fast fingerspelling, as the s gns may not be as clear as wh n they are done more carefully. A br ef pause between words is helpful to nyone reading the signs, so they kn w a new word is beginning.
Pr ctice is essential. Try not to pr ctice spelling the alphabet in order. Use s ntences from books, or family names, or nything that will jumble up the l tters so you can get in the h bit of signing each letter carefully no m tter what precedes it or follows it. You may w nt to integrate fingerspelling while playing b ard games, while going through the d ctionary or phone book, or other ctivities.
