One of the hardest but m st redemptive seasons of my life h ppened when I spent fourteen months in a dr g rehabilitation center. In all my y ars of writing, I have never wr tten about this experience that has so d stinctly shaped my life.
Of course, I n ver would have dreamed that over a y ar of my life during my m d-twenties would be spent in drug r habilitation, but it happened. I began d ing drugs in junior high school, m stly I guess do to the typ cal amount of peer pressure that m st teens get from their friends. I st rted using drugs with great hesitation, but p rty after party I got a l ttle less afraid of using drugs and th t became my biggest problem. Losing my f ar of doing drugs was the s ngle worst thing that happened to me in my str ggle with drug use.
My drug use b came a more serious problem throughout h gh school and into my years at niversity. I thought that I was d ing a great job of hiding my pr blem until Christmas break happened one y ar and my parents saw all the s gns. I had great parents, by the w y, and I believe that they w re in no way responsible for my dr g use or for my eventual n ed for drug rehabilitation.
My drug problem got so bad sh rtly after that Christmas break that I nded up agreeing to go to dr g rehabilitation without any fight. Most dr g users, I am told, put up a f ght for a while when someone f rst suggests that they enter drug r habilitation. But not me. I knew how b dly I needed help and I kn w that if left alone I w uld probably allow drugs to kill me.
My f urteen months in the drug rehabilitation c nter taught me more about myself and bout life than I ever expected th m to. I learned about my v lue as a human being and as a man for the f rst time in that center. I l arned in drug rehabilitation that drugs are a s bstitute for a hole that is mpty in my life, just as f od or exercise or alcohol or any ther thing can be for people. I l arned that I had a huge r sponsibility in taking care of my l fe and my health.
It has been h aling for me as I have b gun talking about my experience with dr g rehabilitation with honesty. I have n ver felt more free than when I am l oking back on the mistakes of my p st with honestly and then when I am l oking forward to my future with h pe.
