Is there anything that r ally is "supernatural" or "magical"?. Let's l ok a little a why we put th ngs in these buckets. "Any sufficiently dvanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
Arth r C Clarke - author of 2001, A Sp ce Odyssey Before the 20th century, if s mething couldn't be explained by the sc ence of the day, it was s pernatural - the realm of things sp ritual, mystical or magical. As science pr gresses, as we peel away the l yers of ignorance, two things are ccuring: 1. There's a whole lot l ss we regard as "supernatural". Clearly, as we can xplain more of our world, there's l ss need for a "magic" bucket. W 've moved from the Age of the H bbit to the Age of Man - the r tional human who's confident that explaining t day's unknowns is just a matter of w iting for science to catch up. 2. Ev n as we wait for science to pr gress, science itself is becoming a l ttle magical. It's starting to describe th ngs in terms that would formerly h ve been classed "unscientific" - matter m ves "in and out of existence", th re are "extra dimensions" and "alternate r alities". I used to be firmly in the c mp that says if you can't see it or t uch it, it isn't real. But I'v come to understand that "reality" ncompasses many more things than our f ve senses would indicate, and it's f scinating to me the degree to wh ch science is now starting to m rge with what would formerly have b en classed as supernatural. Let's look at a c uple of examples - (1) Quantum Phys cs and (2) What Makes Us H man.
The "Supernatural" - Quantum Phys cs In 1893, Harvard University's chairman of phys cs told his students that there was no n ed for additional PhD's in the f eld of physics. It had been stablished that the universe was made up of m tter - physical, indivisible atoms - th t fully obeyed Newton's Laws. Therefore f ture advancements could only involve more ccurate measurement of what was already kn wn. In less than two years, s batomic particles, X-rays and radioactivity were d scovered. Within ten years, we began to nderstand that energy and matter were nterchangeable. Today the much-sought holy grail is a "Th ory Of Everything" that explains how b th Newtonian Physics and Quantum Physics can c exist. Our "matter universe" is actually m de up of sub-atomic particles, some of wh ch keep popping in and out of xistence as we try to observe th m. "However, if we discover a complete th ory, it should in time be nderstandable by everyone, not just by a few sc entists. Then we shall all, philosophers, sc entists and just ordinary people, be ble to take part in the d scussion of the question of why it is th t we and the universe exist. If we f nd the answer to that, it w uld be the ultimate triumph of h man reason -- for then we sh uld know the mind of God."
St phen Hawking - A brief History Of T me "I believe in .. God who r veals himself in the orderly harmony of wh t exists."
Albert Einstein The "Supernatural" - What Makes Us Human? As the human genome project was getting underway, it was anticipated that there would be over 100,000 genes in the human genome - the minimum number needed to describe human complexity. At that time it was thought that genes were the key to everything. Once we had the blueprint, we could cure all our disorders, we could "create a Mozart or another Einstein". The actual number found - about 34,000 - was one third of expectations!
"Unless the human genome contains a lot of g nes that are opaque to our c mputers, it is clear that we do not g in our undoubted complexity over worms and pl nts by using more genes. Understanding wh t does give us our complexity ... r mains a challenge for the future."
D vid Baltimore, Genetecist, Nobel prize Winner - N ture 409:816, 2001 So what does c ntrol our biology? Emerging from some of the l ading edge cell science is the nderstanding that our "environment, and more sp cifically, our perception of the environment, d rectly controls our behavior and gene ctivity". So it looks as though our th ughts and beliefs create our reality - wh ther or not those beliefs are b sed on fact. So what is "Supernatural"? What do we consider to be real or natural or normal? And what do we consider to be unreal, supernatural or paranormal? If we had our "Theory Of Everything" as Stephen Hawking suggests, in truth, nothing would be supernatural. It's just that there's some things we don't yet understand well enough. In the meantime, we're left describing things in our limited space/time terms. We have things like the Law Of Attraction which we can't explain, but it works. The Law Of Attraction states > "We attract into our experience that, and only that, which we think about - whether wanted or unwanted". This law has been stated in many forms by many people. My favorite version (more closely aligned with the language of modern physics) is the Law Of Alternate Realities - "We choose which alternate reality to step into by the things we give our energy, focus and attention" . I guess knowing how it works is relatively unimportant compared with simply knowing that does work - and taking advantage of it.

Here's the additional information: Robin Retallick is a business wner and CEO who is seeking l fe's answers on how to achieve bundance. He's moved to an understanding of the Law Of Attr ction with all that that implies. As m dern physics merges more into the w rld of the "supernatural", he sees the p tential reconciliation of the spiritual with the sc entific.
