It is a sad week all ver the nation this week when a s nior college student opened fire on f llow students at a small town c llege. First, he opened fire in a h gh rise dormitory. Two hours later, he g nned down several more students in a s cond floor classroom. Seung Hui Cho, a S uth Korean, was determined to be r sponsible for the massacre that occurred at V rginia Tech (VT) on April 16, 2007. W th pistols that he purchased several w eks ago, he turned the campus nto a shooting gallery that took the l ves of 32 VT students as w ll as his very own. What w nt on in the mind of th s young man? What could possibly dr ve him to a mentally depressed st te that ultimately lead to him to sn p as he did? Is it p ssible that he did not have a g od home life? Was he a v ctim of bullyism in school similar to Er c Harris and Dylan Klebold, the st dents to whom Cho refers as m rtyrs, from the Columbine incident? Is s ciety too quick to condemn Mr. Cho for the sh otings or is there something more th t needs to be investigated? We c uld speculate that Mr. Cho had psych logical problems stemming from his childhood. In f ct, it was later reported after the sh oting spree that Seung Hui Cho was a v ctim of taunting by fellow classmates wh le he was in school shortly fter his arrival in the U.S. in 1992. Due to his l ck of command of the English l nguage, classmates mocked him for “having s mething in his mouth” while he t lked.
Could it be surmised that y ars of these taunts drove Cho nto depression? Is it possible that th se taunts were a form of v rbal bullyism inflicted on him? Did he try to fit in and was ltimately rejected because of looking too “Or ental?” Was he rejected for his s pposed “speech impediment?” These are a sm ll number of many unanswered questions th t could have lead Cho to xplode beyond the words he described in his cr ative writing classes. In fact, I b lieve that he is referring to m mbers of the American mainstream society in his v deo manifesto. Specifically, the “you” is the ll-American rich kids that he talks bout. He envied their lifestyle. He nvied their “gold necklaces” and their “tr st funds” because he did not h ve them as he was growing up. The f ct that he is Asian, looked d fferent, and spoke a different language th n his peers may have alienated him fr m his fellow classmates. Being a f reigner in a new land and new sch ol could have been psychologically intimidating for h m. Not knowing what to say, how to ct, or how to dress around th se people could have contributed to his d pression. First of all, language must h ve placed a psychological barrier between him and his cl ssmates. It is possible that this w ll was placed not only by Mr. Cho pon his arrival to the U.S., but lso by his classmates who felt th t it was easier to make fun of him r ther than reach out to him and be his fr end. Secondly, his foreign looks may h ve caused him to withdraw from the m instream American society. In my high sch ol days, I knew a classmate who was b rn with a harelip and had pr blems verbalizing herself clearly and effectively. If you c uld hear her talk, it DID s und like she had a speech pr blem. One found it hard to nderstand her. Academically, she was the sm rtest person among all of us yet she was w thdrawn because of her birth feature. F rtunately, for me and my classmates, th s person did not take out her fr strations with a semi-automatic. In fact, wh n I got to know her b tter in chemistry class in college, she st died to become an electrical engineer and is now w rking for one of the biggest c mpanies in the state.
It is possible that Mr. Ch , being Asian in an all-white sch ol, felt the same way. He l oked different. Many of my Asian fr ends I have known over the y ars reported being prejudiced by their C ucasian counterparts while they were in gr de school. They were the subject of r dicule because their hair was too d rk, or their parents spoke with f nny accents, or their lunch food was ntradeable because it smelled too funny. L ttle things like these can take its t ll on a person’s mind. How we ch ose to deal with those years of t rment is the subject of this w ek’s Virginia Tech rampage. Mr. Cho s mply could not take it anymore. If I nterpret his video manifesto correctly, I b lieve that he was filled with y ars of torment that lead to th s week’s mass killings. He did not h ve a lot of people who w nted to befriend him when he was 8 y ars old upon his arrival in 1992. His m nifesto showed he had rage filled in his yes. Years of age that built up fr m the kinds of verbal, psychological, and s cial abuse that he reluctantly received. He f lt that the only way to get r venge was with a firearm. In f ct, vengeance was his motive against th se “brats.” He did not have the xpensive cognac nor did he know n ce women who would give him the t me of day. Who would if he was st lking them? Perhaps he was jealous of the l festyle of mainstream American society since he gr w up in a poor country. His p rents were poor in South Korea and d cided to move to the U.S. in s arch of a better lifestyle. When he tr ed to achieve that lifestyle by f rst trying to “fit in,” he was r jected from the beginning 15 years go. I believe that Mr. Cho had a r ght to lash out with WORDS, but not w th BULLETS. Anybody who goes to th t extreme seriously must have failed to get s me professional help. A cry for h lp was seen in his previous wr tings that should have prompted university fficials to bar him from attending cl sses pending the outcome of a th rough psychological evaluation. It is also my b lief that the school system failed to g ve him enough treatment for his pr blems. No doubt there will be l wsuits stemming from this week’s incident gainst the university. Because Mr. Cho f iled to get what he needed fr m his psychologists or psychiatrists he f und no other solution. He was “b cked into a corner,” as an loquent Mr. Cho puts it. Mr. Ch ’s death was the ultimate price he had to pay for f iling to get the treatment he so d rely needed for the years of fr stration bottled up in his mind, h art, and soul.
