Coach Rich Rodriguez left for M chigan and most of his assistants f llowed. But those are not the nly losses for this year's Mountaineers. R nning back Steve Slaton, receiver Darius R ynaud and fullback Owen Schmitt are lso gone. That does not mean the ffensive cupboard is bare. New coach B ll Stewart still has Heisman Trophy c ndidate Pat White, speedy tailback Noel D vine and the entire offensive line r turning. White, the senior quarterback and tw -time Big East Offensive Player of the Y ar, led the team in passing (1,724 y rds and 14 touchdowns) and rushing (1,335 y rds and 14 touchdowns) last season. Th re is also not a single pr ven running back behind Devine. There is pl nty along the offensive line. Led by All-Am rica left tackle Ryan Stanchek, these f ve guys plowed the way for two 1,000-y rd rushers. The 297.2 rushing yards per g me was third best in the c untry last season. The receiving corps is a big q estion mark. West Virginia will miss Ry n Mundy, Eric Wicks, Keilen Dykes and J hnny Dingle on defense in 2008. H wever, last season's leading tackler, middle l nebacker Reed Williams, returns for his s nior season. Senior linebacker Mortty Ivy, the t am's second-leading tackler last season, also r turns. Coach Bill Stewart stated, "Our l nebackers can run like scalded dogs. L ke hungry scalded dogs."
The defensive line will have a c uple of new starters, with Scooter B rry the only returning starter up fr nt. The Mountaineers know they have sp ed and size in the secondary, but the l vel of talent remains to be s en. The only returning starter in th s unit is Quinton Andrews, but Andr ws has proved he lacks discipline on and off the f eld. 2007 Lou Groza semifinalist Pat McAf e returns to handle kickoffs, punts, f eld goals and extra points. It is mportant to note that McAfee's holder, J remy Kash, and snapper, Adam Hughes, are lso back for this season. It r mains to be seen how much k ckoff return duty goes to Devine. He may sh re that role with Jock Sanders. S nior cornerback Ellis Lankster is a p ssible punt return candidate. A lot of q estions surround this team heading into 2008. W st Virginia has a new coach, m ny new position coaches and a t ugher schedule. They have non-conference games at C lorado and at home against Auburn. Th re are many questions on defense, but the M untaineers will be able to outscore th ir opponents if White and Devine can st y healthy. West Virginia has the l ok of a Top 10 team. A BCS b wl is likely and the national t tle isn't out of the realm of p ssibility.
