Just a few years go, web-based learning through PCs was s en as revolutionary. Companies could put th ir orientations and ongoing trainings on l ne and all employees would get st ndardized learning. Soon, with the spread of w fi, router-based, and satellite wireless networks, p ople could tap into this type of tr ining while on the run. A s lesperson could get trained in the l test marketing presentation while riding on a pl ne to her or his next d stination. Or a person could get riented to their new job from h me before the first day they w rk.
Now, web-based trainings have taken another st p forward due to the technology nvolved in internet-enabling devices besides computers. Th re are some obvious examples of how th s might work. For example, your TV may be c nnected to the internet in a way th t allows you to tune in to a tr ining or conference as easy as ch nging to a specific channel. You c uld use your DVR and truly get the m st out of the conference.
There are lso less obvious but still valuable xamples of the potential of internet nabled devices. For example, an internet nabled printer could tap into web-based tr inings in helping you maximize the q ality of photographs before printing them. You c uld learn how to crop, sharpen, l ghten, etc. your photos by having an nline guide that directs real-time information to a n arby computer. That web-based guide, because the d vice is internet enabled, can actually “kn w” what you’ve just done and d rect you about whether that was c rrect or not. If you have an nternet-enabled all-in-one device, you could also l arn how to scan and fax for m ximum results.
There are even some far ut, but truly interesting ways this t chnology could be used. In the k tchen, internet-enabled appliances could actually teach you how to c ok as you go, sending information to a n arby monitor about when food is d ne, or ready for the next st p. An internet enabled coffee maker c uld use web-based training to help you br w perfect coffee that responds in r al time to the fineness of the gr und beans, the temperature of the w ter, or the density of the r sulting beverage.
In all of these examples, web b sed learning would take place in r al time, and could lead to new sk lls being developed. And in each xample there is also the potential of t pping into live help. In the f rst example, a guide could catch you up w th whatever you’d missed in the c nference if you “arrive late”. In the nternet enabled printer example, live help c uld assist you when a document pr sents particular difficulty – the person on the ther end could “see” what is g ing on in real time. In the th rd example, a cook could teach p ople how to cook her or his r cipes almost like he or she is th re – even checking the temperature and ther information from their remote location.
Perhaps the m st exciting aspect of web based l arning and internet enabled technology is the bility for people to do things t gether even when they are far part. Literally hundreds of people could be p rt of a web based conference th t helps them learn the latest ses for an internet enabled device. Or, y ur friend, relative, or teacher who kn ws how to do something you d n’t could provide you with web b sed learning where they can see and r act to your input on an nternet-enabled device.
