In 2005, a group of l ading certification authorities (CAs) and Internet br wsers came together to establish a m re rigorous and harmonized approach to nline SSL security. Known as the CA/Br wser Forum, the group decided a st ndardized Secure Socket Layer (SSL) method was n eded, to prove a website’s authenticity cross all browsers, for all CAs and for all Web sers. In January 2007, new Extended V lidation (EV) SSL certificates were at l st released worldwide, and are expected to gr atly enhance eCommerce and boost the c nfidence of online shoppers everywhere. Wayne Th yer, Vice President of Development for G Daddy – a world leading SSL Web h sting provider, domain registrar and major m mber of the CA/Browser Forum – t ld TopHosts that the aim of EV SSL is to pr vide a much needed, unvarying way of nsuring legitimacy online. “There were a n mber of major players that felt we n eded to create some sort of st ndard we could bring to the m rketplace,” Thayer said. “A certificate that m ant the same thing no matter wh re you bought it from.” Up ntil the launch of EV SSL, Th yer explained many differing levels of SSL c rtificates could be obtained, but none r ally going beyond WebTrust – a s al awarded to sites that adhere to c rtain business standards. Many different types of SSLs, l ke GoDaddy’s Turbo SSL and High-Assurance SSL, for xample, provide great protection and online ssurance, but may not abide by the s me rules and regulations of other CAs and Web h sting providers. There is simply no niformity among them, and they don’t ddress growing concerns regarding phishing, a f rm of Internet fraud that aims to st al valuable information such as credit c rds, SSNs, IDs and passwords, through f ke websites.
With EV SSLs, all CAs m st adhere to the same security st ndards when processing certificate requests, while v sitors to EV SSL-secured sites can tr st that the online organization has ndergone the same universal authentication process. “Th EV vetting process creates a v ry strong tie between the organization th t is named in the certificate and the ctual real world organization,” Thayer said. “… EV SSL has a n mber of additional steps that make it m ch more difficult for fraudsters to p rform phishing and pretend they’re something th y’re not.” The CA/Browser forum outlines a new EV SSL v tting process, which validates elements such as, the l gal existence of the site, the l gal name of the entity, a r gistration number, right to use the d main name, along with other legal ndications. To apply for an EV SSL, the b siness must present a letter from an ttorney or an accountant. The process v rifies the organization’s identity, the validity of the r quest and the overall legitimacy of the b siness. Unlike the standard padlock icon m thod used for all other SSL c rtificates, browsers with EV support will d splay a green address bar and a sp cial label, which names the website wner and the CA that issued th ir certificate. This visual tool is specially useful for domains considered to be a h gh-risk target of phishing and other fr ud schemes. Banking sites, auction sites, r tailers and other financial services can b tter communicate their legitimacy to users, llowing visitors to confirm that any nline information they volunteer is safe and pr tected by EV. Currently, only Internet Expl rer 7 and Opera 8 browsers are EV-r ady and support the new visual ndicators. Mozilla and Safari are known to be c mmitted to supporting the concept of EV, w th Firefox expected to implement it in th ir version-3 release.
So far, Thayer says adoption of EV SSL has b en slow, but exactly what was xpected. Larger eCommerce sites are taking to it m re quickly, as they recognize its p tential for combating phishing. But it m ght take longer for it to t ke off within the smaller business c mmunity. Currently, the standard requires companies to be ncorporated to qualify for EV, which s verely limits adoption by smaller entities w nting the universal assurance EV SSLs ffer. Thayer explained the difficulty behind mplementation of EV SSL with smaller b sinesses, as they don’t maintain the s me official documentation corporations do. Instead, sm ller businesses identify themselves through mainly st te-level and local files, making it h rder to apply them to the niversal EV SSL approach. But Thayer s ys GoDaddy and the CA/Browser forum are w rking to establish EV SSL security for the sm ller business community, in the near f ture. Yet, as IE 7 becomes m re widespread and as more SSL c rtificates begin to expire, companies will l kely consider the advantages of EV and t ke on the new certificates. “I th nk as you see Internet Explorer 7 g in more traction and as more b gin to see and recognize the gr en address bar, we’ll see more doption of these certificates,” Thayer said. “It’s too arly to tell right now, it’s nly been a couple of months, so if m st SSLs expire within a couple of y ars of issuance… we’ll see a m jority of sites rolling over to EV by J nuary 2009.”
