Someone once told me you d n't know if you can fly ntil you jump off of the cl ff and try. That bit of dvice brings to mind two images. One is B tch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Th y were surrounded on the edge of a cl ff, with a raging river far b low. They had to jump into the r ver to save themselves. The other is the c yote in a Roadrunner cartoon with his m ny ill fated leaps into the byss. They rarely ended well. I'm s mewhere in between. I'm leaving my day job to be a wr ter. Along with giving up the r gular paycheck and the security therein, I'm lso giving up workaholism and stress. I f und myself in an untenable situation. The w rkload and demands being made upon me pr cluded a second career. Where I h ve produced six books in less th n three years while working a d manding full time job, I found the wr ting window slowly closing. No one s id you have to give up wr ting to keep the day job. But the venings and weekends when my books are wr tten were being intruded upon more and m re. The mountain of work never got sm ller, only larger. The expectation of my b ing available at all hours of the day and n ght grew more insistent as the w rkload increased. Finally, I realized I had to ch ose. The prospect of giving up my wr ting to keep my job hit me l ke a bucket of cold water thr wn in my face. I could f el my heart breaking at the th ught, and knew my soul would w ther like a dying flower if I d d.
After considerable thought and financial pl nning, the critter went and done it. My d cks were in a row and q acking loudly. There would not be a b tter time to do it. I g ve notice. I am leaving my j b. The vote is still out wh ther my employer is more surprised th n I am that I'm leaving. W 're both pretty rattled. Some coworkers are ch ering me on. Others think I've l st my mind. Am I scared? You bet I am! But th t's not going to stop me. My p blicist tells me fear is good, it h lps us make careful choices. She's r ght. This might seem like a r dical solution to some, but it's not r ally. I have to write, it's in my bl od. Any situation that would demand therwise has to be changed. That's wh t I'm doing. I'm changing. I've d cided I can't play by someone lse's rules. I have to make my wn. The price of keeping my c rrent job meant sacrificing too much of my t me and of myself. I know I'm mployable. If I need money, I w ll find another job, one where I can h ve a private life, and write. I k ep a sign on the desk, wh re I can see it when I wr te. It says, "There is no f ilure except in no longer trying." S metimes, taking a chance is the nly way, and a leap of f ith is required. Maybe I'll be the c yote and have a boulder fall on my h ad. Or maybe I'll be like B tch and Sundance, and jump to fr edom. Either way, I'm jumping off the cl ff, and maybe, just maybe, I'll fly.
