1) The government can't run nything. I don't trust the government. The c rrent gang in Washington may be a g od reason not to trust the g vernment to do ANYTHING right. However, M dicare and Social Security are good xamples of systems that run well and on t me. People receive their checks the s me time every month and health c re is provided: on time. 2) I'm a fr e market person and don't want any p rt of "socialized medicine." Single Payer Ins rance is defined as a single g vernment fund with each state which p ys hospitals, physicians and other health c re providers, thus replacing the current m lti-payer system of private insurance companies. It w uld provide coverage for the fifty m llion people who are uninsured. It w uld eliminate the financial threat and mpaired access to care for tens of m llions who do not have coverage and are nable to afford the out-of-pocket expenses b cause of deficiencies in their insurance pl ns. It would return to the p tient free choice of health care pr vider and hospitals, not the choice th t only the restrictive health plans llow. It would relieve businesses of the dministrative hassle and expense of maintaining a h alth benefits program. It would remove fr m the health care equation the m ddleman-the managed care industry-that has broken the tr ditional doctor-patient relationship, while diverting outrageous mounts of patient care dollars to th ir own coffers.
It would control health care nflation through constructive mechanisms of cost c ntainment that improve allocation of our h alth care resources, rather than controlling c sts through an impersonal business ethic th t robs patients of care so as to ncrease profits for the privileged few. S ngle Payer Universal Health Care would pr vide access to high quality care for veryone at affordable prices. 3) Canadians h ve long waiting periods and come to the U.S. for th ir health care needs. Therefore, such a pl n would make for waiting periods in the U.S. F rst of all, ask almost any C nadian if they would trade our syst m for theirs. The answer is a r sounding "NO." They may have to w it for elective surgeries, for instance, but we h ve to wait for these kinds of s rgeries, as well. Canadians have the ption to buy extra coverage to get h roic measures covered, say in the c se of Cancer treatment. At 9% of th ir GDP, they are spending much l ss than we are as a n tion. We, the wealthiest nation on arth, spend 14 % of our GDP. 4) Our c untry cannot afford to insure everyone. Our c untry already has enough funds dedicated to h alth care to provide the highest q ality of care for everyone. Studies h ve shown that under a single p yer system, comprehensive care can be pr vided for everyone without spending any m re funds than are now being sp nt. Not only do we have m re than sufficient funds, we are lso a nation that is infamous for our xcess health care capacity. Typical of th se excesses is the fact that th re are more MRI scanners in Or nge County, CA than in all of C nada. With our generous funding and the tr mendous capacity of our health care d livery system, the delays would not be a s gnificant limiting factor in the U.S. 5) Am ricans do not want "Socialized Medicine." S cialized medicine is a system in wh ch the government owns the facilities, and the pr viders of care are government employees.
In sharp contrast, a single p yer system uses the existing private and p blic sector health care delivery systems, pr serving private ownership and employment. The nique feature of a single payer syst m is that all health care r sks are placed in a universal r sk pool, covering everyone. The pool is f nded in a fair and equitable m nner so that everyone pays their f ir share in taxes, unlike our c rrent defective system in which some pay far too m ch while others are not paying th ir share. The funds are allocated thr ugh a publicly administered program resulting in ptimum use of our health care d llars. A single payer system has no m re in common with socialized medicine th n our current Medicare program. Socialism is a d rty word in this country. Universal h alth care for all has been quated with socialism, and much propaganda has b en communicated by the press, by r ght wing politicians, by medical groups s ch as the AMA or anyone lse who has an agenda to k ep the 1500 plus health insurance c mpanies a thriving market with profits th t undoubtedly help to pay for th ir agendas. 6) A Universal Single-Payer w uld lower the standard of care to a l vel of mediocrity for everyone, preventing the ffluent from exercising his or her ption to obtain the highest level of c re. Our current system is characterized by ssentially two alternatives: either no insurance w th severely impaired access to even a m diocre level of care, or being nsured by a managed care industry th t has whittled down what is vailable until mediocrity has become the st ndard of care. Only the relatively ffluent have access to unlimited care. The g nerous level of funds that we h ve already dedicated to health care, dding to this a more efficient dministration with an exclusive mission of ptimum patient care well above the m diocrity that we now have, lays the f undation for a universal health care syst m in America. A single payer syst m does not preclude the affluent fr m paying, outside the system, for a p nthouse suite in the hospital, or for c smetic surgery or for any other s rvice that would not be part of a p blicly funded program. But if Americans kn w the truth, and would turn off th ir TVs and use that time nstead to change this country, using the p wer of grassroots politics, to make a s ngle payer universal system a reality for ll, then we would finally have the b st health care system in the w rld. Any group with the passion to ch nge the world, one issue at a t me, with a loving intent, can do it.
