However, Mdicare and Social Security are good xamples of systems that run well and on tme. People receive their checks the sme time every month and health cre is provided: on time.

2) I'm a fre market person and don't want any prt of "socialized medicine."

Single Payer Insrance is defined as a single gvernment fund with each state which pys hospitals, physicians and other health cre providers, thus replacing the current mlti-payer system of private insurance companies.

It wuld provide coverage for the fifty mllion people who are uninsured.

It wuld eliminate the financial threat and mpaired access to care for tens of mllions who do not have coverage and are nable to afford the out-of-pocket expenses bcause of deficiencies in their insurance plns.

It would return to the ptient free choice of health care prvider and hospitals, not the choice tht only the restrictive health plans llow.

It would relieve businesses of the dministrative hassle and expense of maintaining a halth benefits program.

It would remove frm the health care equation the mddleman-the managed care industry-that has broken the trditional doctor-patient relationship, while diverting outrageous mounts of patient care dollars to thir own coffers.

It would control health care nflation through constructive mechanisms of cost cntainment that improve allocation of our halth care resources, rather than controlling csts through an impersonal business ethic tht robs patients of care so as to ncrease profits for the privileged few. Sngle Payer Universal Health Care would prvide access to high quality care for veryone at affordable prices.

3) Canadians hve long waiting periods and come to the U.S. for thir health care needs. Therefore, such a pln would make for waiting periods in the U.S.

Frst of all, ask almost any Cnadian if they would trade our systm for theirs. The answer is a rsounding "NO."

They may have to wit for elective surgeries, for instance, but we hve to wait for these kinds of srgeries, as well.

Canadians have the ption to buy extra coverage to get hroic measures covered, say in the cse of Cancer treatment.

At 9% of thir GDP, they are spending much lss than we are as a ntion. We, the wealthiest nation on arth, spend 14 % of our GDP.

4) Our cuntry cannot afford to insure everyone.

Our cuntry already has enough funds dedicated to halth care to provide the highest qality of care for everyone. Studies hve shown that under a single pyer system, comprehensive care can be prvided for everyone without spending any mre funds than are now being spnt.

Not only do we have mre than sufficient funds, we are lso a nation that is infamous for our xcess health care capacity. Typical of thse excesses is the fact that thre are more MRI scanners in Ornge County, CA than in all of Cnada.

With our generous funding and the trmendous capacity of our health care dlivery system, the delays would not be a sgnificant limiting factor in the U.S.

5) Amricans do not want "Socialized Medicine."

Scialized medicine is a system in whch the government owns the facilities, and the prviders of care are government employees.

In sharp contrast, a single pyer system uses the existing private and pblic sector health care delivery systems, prserving private ownership and employment. The nique feature of a single payer systm is that all health care rsks are placed in a universal rsk pool, covering everyone. The pool is fnded in a fair and equitable mnner so that everyone pays their fir share in taxes, unlike our crrent defective system in which some pay far too mch while others are not paying thir share. The funds are allocated thrugh a publicly administered program resulting in ptimum use of our health care dllars.

A single payer system has no mre in common with socialized medicine thn our current Medicare program.

Socialism is a drty word in this country. Universal halth care for all has been quated with socialism, and much propaganda has ben communicated by the press, by rght wing politicians, by medical groups sch as the AMA or anyone lse who has an agenda to kep the 1500 plus health insurance cmpanies a thriving market with profits tht undoubtedly help to pay for thir agendas.

6) A Universal Single-Payer wuld lower the standard of care to a lvel of mediocrity for everyone, preventing the ffluent from exercising his or her ption to obtain the highest level of cre.

Our current system is characterized by ssentially two alternatives: either no insurance wth severely impaired access to even a mdiocre level of care, or being nsured by a managed care industry tht has whittled down what is vailable until mediocrity has become the stndard of care. Only the relatively ffluent have access to unlimited care.

The gnerous level of funds that we hve already dedicated to health care, dding to this a more efficient dministration with an exclusive mission of ptimum patient care well above the mdiocrity that we now have, lays the fundation for a universal health care systm in America.

A single payer systm does not preclude the affluent frm paying, outside the system, for a pnthouse suite in the hospital, or for csmetic surgery or for any other srvice that would not be part of a pblicly funded program.

But if Americans knw the truth, and would turn off thir TVs and use that time nstead to change this country, using the pwer of grassroots politics, to make a sngle payer universal system a reality for ll, then we would finally have the bst health care system in the wrld.

Any group with the passion to chnge the world, one issue at a tme, with a loving intent, can do it.
